Waking up way too early and trying to decide if it's easier or harder to get up since I didn't sleep much because I'm too excited about my first snow time in a long time. The now irregular feel of your same old gear, smiles and the smell of coffee. Cramming cars, texting friends to hurry up and forgetting a pillow for the Christchurch-Mt Hutt drive. In may this year!
Talking smack and laughing about nothing, smiles about the first chair ride, rail slides and high fives. Getting snow legs back, edges are too blunt for this ice. Same faces as last year, trying to re-learn the tricks we had down last season. Way too ambitious to learn new things. Stoked on hand drags! 9-4 with a lunch munch on the chair, just because we're so stoked. Were my boots this tight last season? Destroying the minipark, trying to spin way more than the jumps are made for. Off-trail is so icy that we see a patroller rescuing someone's fallen pole with an ice-axe. Never been so stoked on snow this bad.
Tired contentment on the drive home contrasts the nervous excitement on the way up and the music reflects that. Hororata for a beer and a pie, dearer than last year! Home for dinner, so tired and hungry in such a good way. Muscles burning in the way that only re-skiing does, can't train for that. Crash out super early. We've got another 4 + months of this!
