WEDNESDAY 28th 2010
The Van pulled out of National Park on schedule at 6:30am ready for the trip to the "Southern Shores". Canaan, wide eyed and bushy tailed drove the team to Wellington in time to have relaxing lunch before boarding the BlueBridge Ferry to Picton.
It was an awesome crossing, perfect sunny weather. Once on the Mainland it was a long haul into Methven, arriving at 10:30pm. We ate at our favourite Subway in Kaikoura. Unloading into the house took no time at all, as everyone was ready for bed, long day, but good to be in our own beds "for the next month". The house is new and warm with all the comforts that we need.
THURSDAY 29th 2010
We spent the morning sleeping in to catch up, and then headed into Christchurch to collect Leah from the airport. The boys went Go Karting in the city and set some new records !! The Mountain Gym Club was the athletes first stop in the afternoon for their first session.
FRIDAY 30th 2010
Canaan went to Darfield to meet Gerald, of Dynastar / Lange for the team. He came home with "presents" - Ellen, Bronte and Harry's new skis, there were lots of smiles in the house. There was another session in the gym before dinner.
SATURDAY 31st 2010
Early start and off to the airport to collect Bryan and Connar. Another session of Go Karting kept jetlag at bay until the late evening. We took over the house next door-and now the boys have there own space next door. Lots of room for them. We arrived to the gym for a session-a little late, but Margaret was great and let us train, thank you..
SUNDAY 1st 2010
A relaxed start to the day-with the boys trying to get in sync with NZ time as soon as possible. School work was the topic of the day with the boys getting ahead of the schedule !! The afternoon was about preparing for skiing on Monday and chillin out !
MONDAY 2nd 2010
The starting Team is-Bryan Cookson, Connar Huddart, Ellen Dixon, Harry Izard-Price, Leah MacGillivray and Rob Armstrong-with Coach Canaan Pollock. Everyone was up at 7am-up the mountain by 8:15am and all on the lift at 9am. Negotiating the automatic lift access gates was a little testing for some !! Today was about mileage on skis with everyone having not been GS skis for a lengthy period of time.
The morning started overcast-then improved to light snow. Snow conditions were soft after the wind and rain of Sunday, where it was recorded at 180kms!! It continued to snow most of the day and the skiing was done by 2pm.
Once off the snow it was pack up and get back down the hill. A food refuel before the gym-then dinner / showers / skis and Team Meeting. A quiet night ready for another day on the snow tomorrow.
TUESDAY 3rd 2010
An overcast morning in Methven, chains from Canterbury Plains, so we all travelled in the Transit today. The trip was a little longer up with stopping to put chains on, but they were really only needed for the last 500 meters. Up through the cloud it was a clear blue sky. GS miles again today. Something which can now be looked up on their ski passes, this makes it even easier for them to complete their daily journals. They skied great!! A great day was finished at 2pm and we headed back to the house. More food and afternoon jobs. No drying of gear needed today though !! Tai arrived to join the group just in time for the last of the gym session. Video analysis was done after dinner with the Team Meeting. Monitoring of the team pH levels continued.
WEDNESDAY 4th 2010
An earlier start to the day ready to set GS gates on our booked lane today. The road was a breeze. The Team had the course ready to go by 9:15am-which was good team work. The snow was perfect for training. Squaw had the lane right beside Ruapehu-so the mountain looked like it had been carved into slices. Another great training day-the afternoon was school work.
