Weekly Update to Thursday 19th August 2010

THURSDAY 12th

Early morning was cool and clear, but when we exited Methven it was overcast. 5am wake up-depart 6am and on the lift at 7am.
Today was Canadians on Slalom, Kiwis Super G with the Squaw Team. A short day was planned-with training being completed by 9am. (public time on the mountain).

The wind got up early and was the rocking the chairs and giving the gate panels o good airing out! A couple of good gusts at Huber Hut sounded like a train coming through. So we finished and left at 9:30am. By the time we got to the Barrier, the road was closed. The winds were terrible on the first stretch of the road down. And as they say the rest is history-or at least made National News!! 1200 people were stranded at Mt Hutt Resort overnight!! Winds of over 200 km buffeted the Lodge during the night. At 2am in Methven the wind woke many of us up !!

FRIDAY 13th

The mountain was still in recovery mode until late Friday afternoon, when everyone including staff made it down. The "Dinner with the Stars" - held every Friday night at Hubers Hut was still on-which made it a tough few days for some of the staff. (Some of them are our neighbours!) We had a catch up day-laundry / school work / skis. Also monitoring the news and progress of Mt Hutt-some of our Facebook friends were very jealous that we left when we did. Good planning with a little luck :).

SATURDAY 14th/ SUNDAY 15th

Weekend off snow-but school work and skis were top priority. The McGlinns hot box-now in residence at Mackie St-got its work out over the weekend. We took a rental van to Christchurch for the day-shopping / exploring and 10 Pin Bowling. It was a fun day and a day not about skiing, just kids having fun ! By the way Top Score of the Day was-Camp Mum, 2nd was Canaan. Grocery shop for the week on Sunday. The boys played some basketball at the school. Sunday evening Rachel at Mountain Gym ran a "Body Balance" class for the team. A combination of Yoga / Tai Chi / Core Balance and Stretching and Relaxation, the kids really enjoyed it!! Thank you Rachel.

MONDAY 16th

5am start to drizzle and fog in Methven and partly up the Mountain road. The grader coming down the hill looked like a UFO emerging from the fog! Everyone was punctual and on the lift by 7am. A day of GS training at the top of the run-so not easy to see !! The mountain cleared into a super training day!! The USA Men's Speed Team also arrived today. At lunchtime a countup was done of how many runs everyone had done-so some went to finish their 20 while others had finished so they went down. The balance of the afternoon was skis and school work or for those with none the continuation of the Wii Basketball Tournament ! Dryland at 4pm-6pm then dinner making lunches and off to bed.

TUESDAY 17th

An early 5am start and a great day of training GS at the top. Back down by lunchtime and then they played basketball and soccer in the afternoon. We all had dinner at Barkers tonight-time to socialize with the Canadian Alpine Snowboard Team.

WEDNESDAY 17th

It rained during the night, flooding our front lawn-but it was 15cms of new powder on Mt Hutt. A later start of departing 8am-chains on everything from the barrier-so we all went in the transit. We were greeted with the new snow !! But also fog and wind. Visibility was almost zero-could not see the load station of the chair from the café !! So we did the waiting game until 10am-it was not improving so we headed down the hill. They played basketball and soccer in the afternoon. We all had dinner at Barkers tonight-time to socialize with the Canadian Alpine Snowboard Team.

THURSDAY 19th

5am start up and ready to go at 5:45am-but was called off and back to bed-unlikely!! So homework from 6am-10am with the bribe of a trip out of Methven if this was achieved. We hired a van and headed to a new part of Christchurch for us "The Palms" shopping centre. Some watched the movie "Inception" others shopped and some did both. Back to Methven into the drizzly rain and dinner and bed. Camp Mum-Robin Dixon
