Queenstown – the best place in the world to be right now if you’re an Alpine Ski Racer!
My days are full up right now – a very typical daily schedule goes something like this …… Up at 6 am each day, drive up to Coronet Peak for gate training till midday, preparing & eating the right nutritional foods, resting for a few hours, then working out at the gym and tuning my training and race skis with the wonderful guys at Outside Sports (Gary, Pete, Anna, Lance and Jez) before hitting the hay around 9 pm. As expected the last 2 and a half weeks has gone by in a blink with training 6 out of 7 days on Rocky Gully and the Hurdle thanks to the Coronet Peak Race Department, especially Robin Armstrong and Spud, my buddie and coach Pete Warmington and James Lazor from Snowsports NZ.
Conditions have been epic at the Peak. Lots of awesome International Skiers have arrived down South to prepare for their Northern Hemisphere Season, test out their new race skis, and some are getting back into gates after some down time in the sun in preparation for the 100% Pure NZ Winter Games. The well toned bodies in Lycra have been a sight for sore eyes!! It has been a real buzz to be lined up 1 lane over from some of the world’s best World Cup athletes! Today I looked over at Lindsay Vonn lining up for her Slalom training runs at the same time as me – what a blast!
My new Head Skis are fantastic – a huge thanks to Adrian and Simon and the ladies at Head NZ for your ongoing support! I am sure the skis are gonna do me proud in the Winter Games, the NZ Nationals and the Australian NZ Continental Cup Series during the course of the next 4 weeks!
Moving right along, I have 5 more days on snow training gates here on “ the Peak” before heading off to Mt. Hotham via Melbourne for the first of the Australia NZ Continental Cup (ANC) races starting on August the 17th.
Next message may well come from Mt. Hotham, Australia where a few kiwis hope to do our country proud and continue with the Trans Tasman humour and rivalry both on and off the snow!
Have fun on the snow,
Sarah J
