There is something mystical about the way that the Kaikoura mountains rise straight our of the sea near one of the deepest trenches close to New Zealand.

In the inland Kaikoura's in North Canterbury is Mt Lyford and Martyn from SnowTV and I travelled there recently to install some webcams. It was a beautiful day, much like today with 30cms of fresh powder dumped down to the Mt Lyford Village.

Mt Lyford has recently put in Farmside satellite for it's communication, you won't find any cell phone coverage around here. This finally enabled Snowco to get it's webcam pictures out from one of the last snow sports locations in the country.

The Mt Lyford mountain road is an example why, if you travel up any hill you should have good fitting snow chains and take it easy. A hustle bustle city slicker attitude in the mountains is unnecessary when you get to a place like this; after all, you've come here to get away haven't you?

Spare a thought for me, one day skiing on the lower slopes of Porters this season so far and arriving in this winter wonderland with light dry powder beckoning... and not being able to put the boards on to go for a ride. I was in good company though; it's funny who you bump into when standing at the urinal. Mark Inglis was up at Lyford training for his next expedition but because he was on contact to climb to over 5000m in China he wasn't allowed to carry out a risky endevour like skiing. There's an irony there.

The powder was unspeakable light, or so I was told... but don't tell anyone. It looked light anyway. About 120 lucky souls this school holiday weekend enjoyed free tracks all day and as you can see from these shots taken when I was leaving there was still plenty of untracked to be found.

It is amazing the difference between the large commercials and the small commercial & clubs. You can be laid back have a leisurely breakfast and meander up the mountain and still get fresh tracks, all day. The way it should be in my view really.
