The re-birth of cool

80's retro day at Roundhill last week was a defining touch in an era where the younger generation are constantly re-defining the 'cool' levels of fashion

80's day at Roundhill grows and glows

Ok, so maybe these guys aren't exactly the hipsters of Wellington's CUBA st, or the K' RD trend setters of Aucklands high fashionistas.  But you've got to take your hat off to those that remember the fashion disaster era that was the 80's.  Those fluoro one piece hot dogger outfits that amplify the 'swish' of polyester as they strut their way to coolness.

A wide variety of 80's fashions were on display, from the skivvy to the one piece glowing fluoro, the gold cortina was at the top of the car park and the skinny skis were out in force.

The highlight of the day was the water jump - a massive hole dug out the day before and lined with polythene. This was taken on by an astoundingly large number of boarders, skiers and even a monoboarder. Some of them even made it the length of the jump without submerging and those that did (the majority) came up smiling, even if a little frozen!

A wonderful day was had by all and those in the crowd that started the day a little bewildered by the antics, by the end of the day were planning on coming back next year dressed for the part themselves.

It will only be a matter of time before the next generation of ski and snowboard fashion designers embrace this era and it once again becomes the mainstream scene throughout our ski areas.  Having been born in the 70's and vividly remembering the hideousness of power suits and shoulder pads, I dread this day as much as I do my nightmares of being told by ACC I can never ski again (due to some beaurocrat assessing the risk of avalanches and deeming them to be a fundamental and detremental hazard to our health as a skiing population).

Nothing wrong with a bit of highlighter pink so others can spot you in the fog, but to me and no doubt countless others out there, lets save it for the memory banks and pull the suits out for nostalgic days ONLY!

Peace, love and skiing baby, Anyone got a 60's outfit they want to share?

I started snowbaording in the 80's. Skiers dressed like this thought we looked pretty silly in our baggy pants and parkers. Hard case that.
