ha what was i thinking, we live at ruapehu not red mtn bc....got to the carpark this morning about 9am snowing very cold brisk se wind..visibility nil..survived the freezing cold chairlift to get to the giant cafe, huddled inside for 30 min then the vis improved enough to get two runs down the why nots..express not running, prob still snowing up top so freshies tomorrow.. expect the crowds but the pond skim will be fun..
Hmmm freshies, so very excited!!!

Drove up from Wellington this morning to hit some freshies. Instead I got half a dozen runs down an empty why nots and boneyard. Pretty icy with about a cm of top layer and the odd powder drift. No vis - I have white boots and I couldn't see them or the ground. Pretty surreal stuff. Hoping for a better day Monday

Decided on Friday night that I couldn't miss the last weekend at Whaka - recovering broken ankle or not. Had the most amazing time - ankle held up well (thanks to some magic anti-inflamatory cream and regular doses of panadol/voltaren). Tried to skin up Skyline Ridge on Sunday arvo but skins kept slipping - too steep ot snow too wet/soft? (or poor technique - only second time out on skins). Ended up walking most of the way. So worth it - amazing run down. Did Turoa yesterday - not so great for the ankle on the firm stuff in the morning but Ok once it released. Forecast looking promising for some freshies this weekend? Shame seaon ending just as I am ready to get back into it. Canada in 3 months though...

They only thing they paid for is my physio. I could have claimed time off but as I work in a desk job what's the point going crazy with boredom at home when I could be productive and entertained at work. Plus the injury was 3 months ago and you have to get back on the horse sometime. People start running at about this stage after a ankle break - much more risk of ankle roll than skiing.

I will. Just come right in the last week as the muscle inflamation has reduced from the dilligent hot/cold bucket treatments twice a day and use of Hirudoid cream (forget anit-flamme - this stuff works!). Going to take things easy till the weekend though.

Well what an awesome 3 days up the slopes. Spent all 3 on Turoa as the last time I was on Whaka's the snow cover wasn't fantastic, and I'd heard rumors (turned out to be true) of the far west closing early.
Saturday was an awesome light powder day. They had issues with burned out wires on the High noon express, and I didn't get up top until about 11, but from that moment on it was awesome running through the triangles with just that light coating to make it all smiles.
Sunday took very long to release, not until about half one did things soften up, and then the mist decided to roll in thick. If you were confident and knew where you were headed then there was still a lot of fun to be had. In a small weather break we traversed to beneath the girdlestone and had a wicked run down that face. Passed some people getting set to skin their way up, not sure if it was anyone from here but if so you're probably on camera!
Monday the snow softened up much earlier, and the best thing, no queues! For a forecasted wet day, the weather didn't arrive until about 3pm, and it was the best weather all weekend. Had about 5 runs out in the glacier making awesome fresh tracks. What a way to finish the season!

I'm mad keen to give it another try so I hope to get another couple of days in before summer arrives.
Stoked!!!
By Blunt 2 months, 2 weeks ago.haha 2 months and 2 weeks makes a whole session. Yesterday was my 13th day on the Mountain since I posted that 2 months ago, so i guess I got more than a few days in before summer..
As I mentioned Sunday and Monday were steeler at Turoa with Monday the pick due to small crowds.
But I had some munter take my board from out of the rack outside the base area cafe. Only took my eyes off it for a few minutes, came back and only my sons board remainedSo I had to hire a board for the rest of the day ... and it was a big heavy PIG! I went for a 155 to try something a little longer and apart from a little bit more straight line stability my (now stolen) 150 is a much better board. I kept checking the racks all during the day. Was totally gutted. On the way back to hand in my hire board took one last look and there it was! certainly not where I left it and it wasn't in the spot I found it less than an hour before. Sure are some idiots out there especially if they mistook my board for either their own or one they hired.
This incident certainly made me appreciated my own board.

I skied Whaka Sat/Sun and Turoa yesterday. Whaka snow condition and coverage way superior to Turoa. Shame it closes earlier but can see why - need more staff to run the place and they need to get started on the new Knoll Cafe/LBC upgrade (Hope they have resource consent for the Knoll - Dave Mazey said if they didn't have it by the end of this week it would be no-go).

I figured someone would bite on that
Look at it this way if you injure yourself skiing/boarding,playing Rugby or any sport then dont expect the country to pay for your time off work and recouperation.
Some people take the piss out the system while others carry on and get back to work like Jude has, of course I feel a bit pissed about this as I ride a motorbike and have never had an accident that has been claimed from ACC. Yet I hear of a freeloader who injured themselves sking on a day they should have been at work getting paid out by ACC. Now I think I got a right to be pissed now dont you? Not saying it was anyone on this board but if the shoe or should say cast fits then ...

Pretty much normal time for closing whakapapa ok maybe weekend earlier but given the numbers that were up midweek comapred to the weekend. You can see why!
Glad you said about the resource consent because I knew they had not been granted consent yet and its probably a result of what pledge Sue Morris said the day after the fire which generated a bit opposition within the council and ratepayers of the district waiting for building consents. Dave Mazey should aim at the CEO job of RDC might get things moving quicker.
If the system allows it go for it I say. If a sport related injury is alloacted ACC funding then all good.
Sounds like sour grapes to me Gav. Skiing and Snowboarding is considered a sport whether its during a work day or not mate. Riding a motorcycle is considered transport unless its under racing conditions. Bad luck for you.

Speaking of terrain parks can anyone recommend a good twin tip that is a) light (e.g. *not* a K2 PE/Extreme, which I found a bit heavy for spins personally) and b) passable for non-park stuff. I need something to do park with my daughter as she's getting very keen now and my Xplorers are a tad unsuitable and I don't want to put them anywhere near a rail ![]()

Why not? That is why I pay taxes and ACC levies (and pay for health insurance so I don't use public resources when I can afford to go private).

great weekend, haven't done 3 days in a row for quite a while, body every kind of sore today.
Everyone is bound to have different opinions on ACC, some people may never need it in their life time and think how crap it is that we have to pay all these extra taxes atm and in general.
I used to get annoyed by it all till I needed to claim ACC, 12 years ago I was playing soccer and hurt my knee, was told at the time it was sprained, and have just found out this year that I actually, tore my ACL, meniscus and had a small fracture, I now have very bad arthritis (knee of a 50-60year old my specialist said, I am 27) that is not fixable and now I need ACC.
So yeah, you just never know when it could be useful to you.
We are should be grateful that we are not some other countries that you have to have medical insurance to even be looked at....
My two cents any way. =)

Totally agree. gavspad - least ACC makes sure you get the care you need no fault, no questions asked if you crash your bike. Would say you would pay heaps more in insurances if you were somewhere like the US. NZ's are a grumpy moaning lot who don't appreciate how good they have things for such a small country. Over this topic now

That's a bit of a tricky one... lightweight park skis tend to not ski particularly well on the rest of the hill. I demoed a pair of Line Afterbangs for a few runs, they kick ass in the park but they're pretty terrifying lapping around the groomers to get back to the lift, especially if it's a bit chopped.
The PEs/Extremes you tried, where were they mounted? If they were anywhere back from +5 then they're always gonna feel a bit silly. Moving my old PEs to +6 (and later my Hellbents to center) made a big difference in spinning them.
All that said... hmmm... light all mountain twin tips... K2 Silencer or Disorderly, Line Chronic, Armada AR6 or Pipe Cleaner, Atomic Twins or Punx. All good skis.
I figured someone would bite on thatthe answer to that is not to get on the free gravy train that is ACC.

the system is there for a reason, i agree there is abuse of it and needs to be regulated especially as it has gotten to a point where it is in deficit and with the GFC not a good environment to be increasing taxes to decrease the loss. as some have said the taxes have been already paid why not use it if required, i am glad i can use the physio for little or no cost but then again i did contribute to it with the high amount of tax i pay... also sounds a bit like car/bike/home insurance... always spending cash for it and never use it and when you dont pay for it wham.... should have had insurance...

I'm not tooooo worried about their trail capability as I'd only have to keep up with my daughter which isn't a problem .... yet.
Afterbangs. I looked at some in the shop and had a laugh, looks like someone made a skateboard in the shape of some skis! I can believe they would be terrifying.
The PE's would have been mounted back which was probably a factor, they still seemed a heavier ski than I'd need. I'm pretty crap at all things park so I need the odds in my favour
I can get a pretty good price on Dynastar Trouble Makers too & they get fairly good reviews. Next year I'll have a roofbox so a pure park ski might not be an issue as I can swap out & not worry (as much) about gear going walkies.

Rumours are circulating of next years season passes on sale in november like they did last year! I have my doubts about the success of it this year considering how they marketed a big increase would happen in April and it was actually a drop. Saving just $30 in effect on the April price.
