How did this change from a jeep skidded in front of me to my cars better than yours?
I have a Bighorn and a AWD Carib The Carib gets most skifield duty as the bighorn is a pain to drive any distance with droning mud tyres rattling diesel and no carpet. Also I only have chains for it. The carib has only been made to fit chains once and it got front and back and performed well. It still has managed to scare me when finding unexpected ice when chains wernt required.
Freshie is right when he says you can leave the hubs locked and switch between 4wd and 2wd. You do use a little more fuel but otherwise no issue. Leaving a part time 4wd in 4wd when on solid surfaces can cause problems.
Personally I prefer manuals in all my cars but the reality is that autos are the future and they are as reliable and fuel efficient as manuals. There are special techniques for descending hills in an auto but you shouldnt need them on skifield roads but if you do a little 4wd training will soon teach you. You can google "left foot braking" and amoungst other stuff you will find the answer. Practise before you need it.
As for Subarus. I have several friends who have these and they are good people as are most Subaru owners but when you meet a moron on the road the chances hes driving a Subaru is very high. Blame the marketing people for making a good car appeal to the wrong people

So do some of the Legacys including mine

It's low enough for getting to and from most ski fields.

Tukino is the only one I couldn't get to and that was because the car was too low to go over the mess left by the "real" 4wds
