Massive spring storm. Re-open canterbury fields!
Over the next 3 days, large amounts of snow is forecasted to fall over the south island fields. Totals are hard to predict at this stage but most canterbury fields should get at least 50cms, possibly as much as a meter with much deeper drifts. For some fields, the snow base has already gone, therefore making a reopening difficult. Mt Hutt will really regret closing today once this storm comes through. But for Mt olympus and Broken River inparticular... the snow bases there are still amazing, olympus webcam looks like the middle of august in a good season! I'd say that br and olympus would be able to stay open weekends for at least another 3 weeks, taking the season to at least the 5th-6th november. I think the snow will hold up beautifully after this big dump comes. Think about it!
We got 50cm last season in queenstown on remarks closing day and they didnt stay open. as stated by many people, late season snow wont change anything if punters arent keen. and weekend warriors and season pass holders dont bring any money to ski areas!
Yeah it's understandable for big commercial fields like remarks and coronet but for small clubbies like olympus and br... surely a couple more weekends to enjoy the best snow of the season wont hurt ![]()

because he has forgotten the hot spring sun melts it pretty fast.
Jono it's time for a trip north if you want a ride up the hill. Nothing stops you hiking it.
Best time of the year to get splitboarding.....
