Nice pic btw Voltaren.
Nice Voltaren. Cover didn't look the best this side and couldn't be bothered driving round. Cover looks surprisingly good in the drifts.

Damn I miss that mountain!! I've been in Europe so long now I forget what makes all the great features on Ruapehu. I wanna come home!!!!

Place is just amazing at the moment. Wicked warm sunny days, good amount of tourists paying the bills, peacefull and the sunsets with or without the solid wind clouds have just been un real. A quick peak at the Mts a couple of times an hour are mandatory.

went up for the annual off season mooch around, was very busy Easter Saturday. Table by the window at the knoll was hard to come by
Isn't the chilled atmosphere at the Knoll in Summer such a wonderful thing? compared to the rush of Winter?
Slow thread no snow around
But this should fire it up, the name of the replacement Highflyer chairlift is the "Nga Wai Heke Chair Lift"
So what is it really going to be called? I can just imagine any international tourists pronouncing that ![]()
maybe the heke or more likely the south basin chair.
Temps dropping, had enough of a month of sunshine.

I'm most likely still going to call it the 'Flyer

Resource consent for the temporary Knoll cafe had been withdrawn due to objections from local iwi. It can be used to house plant etc but not open to the public. Be prepared for a more crowded Knoll cafe when events/school groups on.
--------------------------------
reine de l'hiver
Apparently Nga Wai Heke means cascading waters of the waterfall nearby.
So maybe Cascade chair or Waterfall chair??
Damn. That made a real difference when the school groups are in. was also a nice quieter alternative on busy days.

Thats not actually correct it was not just the local iwi that objected. Same as the impression given it was the iwi that objected to the car event last month. Ruapehu politics is district wide and part of a standoff going on between local and adjacent councils and a goverment department and community concerns with the iwi being part of it.
Resource consent was granted for a temporary cafe and RAL wanted to extend that beyond the original agreement. Sets a precedant not just on the mountain but in the district. Yes a lot of politics going on and thats just part of it.

Already have a waterfall chair on the mountain but cascade chair sounds more appropriate although I guess part of the deal was to be more politically and culturally correct with the maori name.

The literal translation is more or less "The water falling" - As you said, there's already a Waterfall chair on Ruapehu. I have a sneaky feeling we're going to nickname it the Yeah-Nga :P
NgĀ Wai Heke
Meaning
This name refers to the cascading waters that descend in close proximity to this chairlift
i reckon cascades sounds good.
^^I like that
So the rocks are going to be cooled down a bit more by the expected cold front in the next week.
Mountain was looking a bit bare until now.
The nightly routine starts: Right i'm off to bed - 2 hours later of video browsing with sick beats and you cant sleep with the thoughts flowing of magic lines going to be skied in 2 months deciding which beasty rockered plank to ride for the day. Feels like i'm dreamin.

Chris congrats, what job have you got? Great to have the insider info on here. My first question of the season (every season) are they going to open the express on the first day if theres plenty of snow before hand? So far in my experience it is 'your dreamin' wait until closer to holidays but hope that this year is different.
7 weeks and counting.

Might still be warm up north but the water has cooled right down here in Wellington, boot and glove temperature. Even castlepoint is pretty cold. Still feels far to warm for snow though.
Thanks Jedski, been trying out a new look for 2012, think good ol Mt doom might be it
Definitely chilled off tonight in Auck's. The house didn't really warm up all day. Even the cat is covering his nose and hogging the wheat bag.

It's really starting to chill considerably here in palmy. SD - just the basics, in the rental department. But that will give me a couple of hours each day (working days) hitting the slopes...off day's..probably still up there! Yeah hoping to get some good weather news for you guys here. Doubt that the express will be open before the school holidays, but fingers crossed. I remember the season before last, all the first days were high flyer only, which was pretty bad (lots of ice and rocks) but I couldn't resist.

I remember whaka being pretty good early season 2010 with most of the east side going by late June, but I think Turoa was quite limited.
Unfortunately 2010 turned to custard because of rain....taken Aug 2010

Hey all!
Love this thread - i followed it closely in 2010 (so Jude's pic, above, is bringing back sad memories of that season).
Looking forward to a mint season this year though!
Jude, that pretty much sums up 2010 haha.

Freezing level down to 1000m tomorrow.. lovely chill in the air in Wellington today. Read an article on stuff about it continuing to be a warm May as it was in April, lets prove them wrong!

Snow in May will not stay, Snow in June still to soon.
Who was getting excited about a unusual dump of snow in February and look how the mountain looked a few days ago.
A season like last year would be good! Three dumps that set up a season! Although the July School Holidays would have been killed if they had not been two weeks later!
Good weather until the infamous August Dump and then another saving dump in September and lots of sunny days and very few closed days!
Crowd free because of the Rugby World cup (except that horror weekend in late August.
Jude thats disgusting to show those horrible photos of 2010 ![]()

^^ Not long now, when is your planned approach? Post some more 'most shocking' photos to cheer Gavspad up.
@ Gavs - We all got excited about the snow as it makes things look fresh yet all know she would melt away. We all are stoked on this dusting yet it will be gone by Friday. Yet we still all are raging for the next metservice report forecasting snow. Cheer up man, snows a coming...and I still am a believing I will get a stingy hike in by May 31...just scraped and sorted out the super rockhoppers engine running and waiting! ![]()

@jedski - oh contray I am more than looking forward to slipping and sliding and mugging the crowds
June 16th can not come fast enough the next 6 weeks is Holiday Time and once winters breath has laid its white blanket thickly on the hillside then the work hard play hard will be go go go and let it snow
Just had a walk down memory lane and was reminded of a night watching the Dance Exponents at the hot lava in the 80s.
Is the hot lava still going (bear in mind I left NZ in 92 if that sounds like a stupid question)

yes it was open most weekends (DJ/band/Rugby games)last year and the year before.
