Awesome place, expect the unexpected and a few Russians,
Glad Ive been, before it becomes the next Aspen!!!!!!
The Indians reckon its going to be the Aspen of the Himalaya's..............
Any tips on going there? Was thinking of making a visit next summer.
Go with one of the companies,we went with Ski Himalaya,it definatly helps to have people who no the area,
Expect the Gondy to shut down at some stage,
Relax and enjoy the different pace,Makes the club field pace seem like a big city.
Be nice to the locals, give more than you take.
Its a big place,With huge avalanche paths,it looks like it has an avie program now,so respect the closure's,As there so much snow to go around.
And just enjoy I,m glad Ive been a couple of times, definatly worth the trip.It generally snows for 3-5 days and is then clear for 5-7 days,But when it does snow it can snow for a week or 2.Thats why its good to go with someone like Ski Himalaya as they have a shuttle service that will drop you off at the top of the trees(which is below the village)and pick you up,Awesome terain and no one around, beats sitting out the storm,
The locals are so friendly as are the army, you just ahve to get usded to having guns, outposts and armoured cars evrywhere.and expect to get frisked more times than you can imagine.
Again as the they say over there Relax this is Kashmir.

hey james, what made you pick gulmarg in the first place? (no hidden meaning, honest question)
Had been to Japan the 2 previous years, and the 2nd year it had changed so much,Had got really busy,so wanted to try some where different,Was looking at Iran and Russia aswell,But decided on Gulmarg. Was living in Perth then so only a 12 hour flight to Delhi.Would recomend to anyone who not into mainstream resorts.

Worked it out, easy when you don't have a 3 year battling for the computor!!!!
Put a few together,no real boarding ones, but gives you an idea
Also heres one to prove you don,t have to ski first. My Daughter at 2 and half boarding

G'day all.
I just got back from a 2 month stint in Gulmarg with 2 of my buddies (although one left early after dislocating his shoulder twice). What an amazing place. An amazing culture, an amazing mountain and in the end amazing snow.
From reading what james66 has said, not a whole lot has changed (when were you last there james?) However, the new ski patrol, a group of kashmiri men, headed by an American Brian Newman, who works as the avalanche forecaster out of Treble Cone in our winters, looks after the main bowl directly under the 2nd phase of the gondola, this includes using explosives from the army to control the avalanche paths. Brian is there to teach the local ski patrol how to run the mountain and has been doing so for the last 3 seasons. They are a pretty well organised group now. He also does snowpack assessment outside the ski area and creates an avalanche bulletin for backcountry riders. Every Tuesday night he holds a safety evening at one of the hotels to bring everyone up to date on the current conditions on the mountain. This is a really usefull service.
I can only see going with a tour company as beneficial if you were going for a short period of time and didnt have much time to get to know the place. It is much cheaper to just turn up and check out a few of the hotels. Getting a guide for the first day or 2 can be a good idea. Otherwise, exploring the place is a whole lot of fun and all the people there are really friendly and its easy to tag along with different riders and organising taxis is not as hard as you think. In fact, most of the time you dont need to organise one at all, they tend to be waiting on the main tree run trails during storms to pick up riders. Or you can just grab onto the back of one and get towed back up to Gulmarg.
Definitely bring touring gear, as it opens up a lot of terrain, and i mean A LOT!
And take an avalanche course before you go if you haven't already. As james66 said there are huge avalanche paths. There were quite a few incidents this year due to a persistent weak layer that remained until the end of Jan. This is what got the the soldiers at HAWS. A friend of mine went for a 400m+ ride and was lucky to survive. The whole upper mountain is avalanche terrain. And it is a monster!
If someone explains how to upload some pictures I'll throw some up.
Will be back in Gulmarg without a doubt!

Mate, you gotta host them somewhere and paste the URL in wrapped around IMG tags.
Photobucket or imageshack are the most popular although you can use facebook etc if you have an account.
Flick me a PM if you want more help.

That takes the concept of Snow Patrol to a whole new level.
I bet people would think twice about snaking the queue when there's a bloke with a Kalashnikov sheep dogging the queue.
