Coronet Peak Dumps Student Rates
As well as putting season pass prices up heaps they dump student rates but only at cp, they are turning it into far to much of a field aimed at aussies and seems they don't even want locals to go there.
$95 for 3 lifts is getting outrageous when you have cardies just around the corner with much cheaper day passes and student passes
Looks like cp has lost my money to cardies and tc this year with them dumping student passes, when I can ride cardies for $55 a day with ral discount why would I pay $75 with discount at cp for less terrain?
because you want a flash cafe to sit in.
--------------------------------
Shit happens.
maybe some people but not me.
I think their hated of ski bums goes beyond the fact they don't bring much money to the field. I think they're actually being a bit elitist, trying to create an exclusive resort where rich tourists can get away from the scruffy hooligans who go too fast and spit from the chairlift.

I feel your pain bro but at least you have options. Unlike us RAL'ers.

If you don't like my fire don't come around.
i heard a rumour that u could only ride CP if you have a 1piece bib setup or spyder jacket and pants. next season it'l be skiers only like alta in utah

Some years ago there was a complaint from an NZSKI employee who had worked in Aspen about the poor conditions of the job in comparison. NZSKI management
response was "Our clients drive Subarus and Corollas not BMW X5s" or words to that effect.
Checking the RAL website they do not do Student Rates either. That must be a real blow as well!

that is true but there is a huge difference between a $400 season pass and a $800 pass as well as their day passes being $10% less and the thing is ral has never had them while cp used to have them and remarks and hutt still have them.
My point is that nzski and cp are trying to target the aussie market and not caring about the local market, hope they loss out to cardies and tc whole actually offer something decent for what you pay.
plus turoa has over 2x the patrolled area of cp and then 2 lift accessed back country areas at least the same size. cp is tiny yet the most expensive place to ski in nz. sure tc is also expensive but it has terrain that can justify it cp can't.

they should do that then it might die, oh wait they would just fund it from mt hutt.
yeah if the plan fails, they can just put the price up at hutt and remarks to cover it![]()

A couple of years ago people were complaining about Treble Cones season passes and lift passes. Pricing at any ski area is driven by the strongest market force if that is the Australian Market then I do not think NZski will lose any sleep over a few complaints on this forum.

Considering they don't even reply to emails I think thats a safe bet.
How about try a telephone? Emails have a habit of being accidentally binned as spam.

so convince everyone to go to porters or the clubies so nzski has less money. hutt might change if porters ever gets its grand plan finished.
and how are you going to do that? In this forum? mate look at how few people post here...
well you joined mate, so its having some effect. impreza thats what i try and do, hence why i attract the trolls![]()
yep I did. yeah the 3 or 4 people on this forum that dont want to go to a nzski hill will just sink them.... you guys have made it clear you never want to go to an nzski hill, so why keep whining about them? why not just move on?
*edited 23 Feb 2010 00:39
another worthwhile contribution joe. you've made a real differnece since joining
oh and that 6-8 ppl who have left all probably know 3-4ppl minimum, who know another 3-4 and so and so. you see how that works? the reason we go on is its very easy to change the problems and bring us and the 100s of others who have left back. hell if i lost a bunch of guys who bought season passes every year for 5 or more seasons id ask a few questions
oh and if you've read the press at all in the last 2 years, hutt has made the news multiple times when disgruntled punters go to the media. normally due to lifts not running when report said they were and ridiculous liftlines![]()
thats a good point. doesn't explain why they get better and better numbers every year though. why their customer satisfaction numbers are at an all time high. why they are an award winning company for work place choice. Sure, people have a concern sometimes, but they are grown up about it and reasonable. they see the right people about their concerns and it gets resolved.
Go mrjoe - you rock.
Hi by the way.![]()
so how do these record numbers add up to the removal of student pass prices at CP joe? must be flush with cash getting all these extra punters you speak of. how do u know customer satisfaction is at an alltime high, when they havnt done a survey in 2 years? as for workplace of choice award, ask the last 2 park managers about that aye?
so who would i talk to that will make the 45min liftlines on a pow day dissapear? who do i talk to to get the lifts open on time, when the reports say they are? try answering some questions instead of acting like you know it all but answering nothing and admit you work in nzski marketing

by grownup joe, do u mean i should write letters to mountain scene complaining like the qtown locals do every season?![]()
from what you have said, you did not go up to hutt last year. I may be a little of the mark here, but I do believe on a de-ice it went past 9am 2 times in 2009. Because of mods being made constantly buy their team its getting better. and will keep improving. Lift lines are long because Mt Hutt has the better snow and terrain compared to porters, so yep. on a pow day its a little wait. I know the last two park managers. great guys. but hutt employs alot of people! so you will get some upset ones. they are not on here complaining though... On the issue of the surveys, they do them every day.
on a pow day its a little wait.
how long is a little?

hows the carpark space looking? got one by the highway to fit the last 200 ppl in yet? great value turning up at 9.30am, park at info booth and get a 14km shuttle up the hill![]()
bp, almost all of your complaints seem to be about hutt? Which isn't really the subject here... go grind your axe somewhere else. Remarks have a solid park crew and great park, sorry to hear that Hutt screwed up for you, but that hill has NEVER had a good rep... A new park will be appearing at coronet in the next year or two.
It is a bit sh*t that Coronet have dropped student rates, but it probably has something to do with the fact that bugger all students were buying day passes there anyway, mostly being season pass holders. There is a student season pass rate for Coronet and Remarks, but it's not being offered online... 499 for the two hills, a hundred more than last year, but still not bad. Being able to ride coronet early season and during winter fest, when it is quiet as, is way better than being bored as hell in Wanaka waiting for TC and Cardies to open... Sh*t I know a fair few people who have made the switch from TC to NZSki in the last couple of years, funnily enough.
I ride coronet a lot, it's a good fun hill, queues have not been an issue in the last few years. I believe the old double was nearing the end of its useful life, been breaking down heaps, so it was going to be replaced. Anyone who doesn't think that beginners and package holiday makers from oz are not the bread and butter for southern lakes fields is dreaming. Cardrona market themselves primarily as a family and beginner hill, as do remarks, TC is a slightly different story, but honestly CP is probably the last of the hills to really jump on that band wagon.
As for bitching and moaning about the new base building? Far out, who cares? The heated deck is the way forward for them, and it's a damn good spot for a few beers and checking out the rugby between night runs.

Much as people love to hate on RAL if I'm honest they did a damn good job last year. Especially for the cost of a season pass. They made a clear effort to get lifts and terrain open as early as possible and the park at Turoa was top notch.

mrjoe, if it has all changed for the better since i last dealt with them then thats great. customer satisfaction and concerns being even listened to in the 2007/2008 seasons were not the case for me.

Queenstown is a poshy place. Apart from CP, how laid back are the other Q'town ski resorts?
As a student back then, didn't ski much, no money and no time. I just got a daily pass for the day or two. Dunno what is it, but I quite liked CP, it is IMO more developed than RAL. I think they had a decent cafe right that you can get a nice salmon or fire cooked pizza?
Q'town by itself was marvelous. So much international visitors, it feel more global. They had a decent city than Whakapapa or Ohakune.
so the measure of a good ski resort is whether it has a good cafe?
dude u can keep your city..some of the best ski resorts in europe only have villages at base
--------------------------------
come on freshie u cant call it a real resort if it doesnt have a big sundeck and wood fired pizzas at $30 a pop![]()

The Remarkables across the valley from CP would have to be a more laid back field and more family orientated
too. Having said that though they do have one lift that mainly only advanced skiers go up called Shadow Basin which gives you access to some adventurous terrain including a run called Homeward Bound where they pick you up in a truck/bus at the bottom. You can do alot of hiking from this lift to Lake Alta Chutes and the lookout over Queenstown.
I agree with you that Queenstown is a neat place and there is always a new building development going up every year. There is a saying that it is a town of Dreams,Heartbreak and Loneliness for a lot of people who live there however.
*edited 26 Feb 2010 00:47
remarks is a nice fun hill despite its flat spots and alta chutes are great value on a pow day. elevators my fave.hold ya speed out the bottom or its a long walk back to top of alta chair though. as far as parks go remarks is up there and the stash is something different![]()
I don't just want to eat a sandwich or a cheaply made expensive burger or fish n' chips up at RAL.
The neat thing I liked about Queenstown was that if you want to buy it, you have that option. Such a international place. You can as a group hire out an apartment unit, play card games, walk along the waterfront, watch a movie, window shop and meet the locals who might have not skied once.
The South Island landscapes are gorgeous.
I've spent a whole week in RAL at the end of 2009 season. On the week days it was practically a ghost town.
I am into landscape photography and if there is one place to take photographs it would be the lower half the South Island.

If you want to take some good scenic shots from a skifield Treble Cone Wanaka is the best in my opinion.
Queenstown is a lively town because it is tourist industry focussed where as towns like Ohakune, Methven
and to a lesser extent Wanaka are farming towns.
ray in other words your more interested in why you can buy and do other than skiing?
I don't care for flash food or a town with everything a city has to offer.
When I go to the mountains I want good mountains and lifts without 40min ques, I'd rather have the cheap ral sandwich than the flash cp burger if it means I get more time on the snow and have better uncrowded runs.
ohakune is fed by weekenders while qtown is feed by tourists so it doesn't die at weekends.
A ghost town is good news as that means empty ski field in the morning, pack town = pack ski field = not much fun.
im just starting to realise what a different breed we are impreza. seems many want more than skiing out of there trips.I want to shred as many vertical metres as poss, others want to do a run then drink a mulled wine and eat woodfired pizza on a heated deck before going bungee jumping. it takes all sorts i guess. queenstown is a soulless moneypit that i can easily live without. wanaka etc are real towns i could easily do a season in. Its like north lake tahoe vs south lake. one side is quiet, tastefully done and cheap. the other side is overhyped, overpriced and filled with tourists that drive you crazy.
^agreed![]()
--------------------------------
Glen Plake still rolls South Lake though right? What's wrong with enjoying a bit of nightlife, decent (and cheap food? Not to mention Qtown is far better for cheap accom than Wanaka.
People down this end of the country have definitely noticed the so called Crown Range switch over the last couple of years, where Wanaka is quickly becoming way up tight, while qtown is big enough that it is easy to find your scene - whether that be the tourist dream, bouncing the night away, decent gigs, a quiet beer, or a night at home with the playstation. This is all on top of the riding of course.
That new lift at Cardies is gonna be iffy this year eh.
agree to disagree there ST, you wont ever change my mind. funny most of the tahoe locals i met that have been to nz preferred wanaka![]()
heavenly can have plake, squaws got an olympic gold medal and was the home of the legendary shane mcconkey![]()

sure qtown does have lots of cheapish places to stay, but it's still more of a party town than keen skiers town. Half the people you stay with don't get up the hill till lunch time.
You can hardly even find a new zealander in qtown except maybe the shuttle driver, while wanaka still feels like nz and people are far more into the skiing than partying all night and sleeping for half the day.
who wants to get up at lunch after the dump when it's all been tracked?

Its only the gapers that sleep in and some will buy a day pass at 11am???
![]()
If it hasn't dumped over night, only gapers rush to get up by 9am, if there's no new snow, why rush? Unless you want to get some turns in before work, which is very doable at cp.
Best thing to do is party on the hill all night and be on the lifts first thing, and yep that happens in qtown and yep it's dirt cheap too.
cant do that up here. if you arrive at hutt after 9am on weekends powder or not u will be parking down low and getting a shuttle.
but like u say ST qtown is and always will be the no1 spot for snow, parties and everything in between. utopia but![]()
because if you get up there at 9am you get some runs in before the ques turn up as well as the fresh groomers. by 11 am runs are crud and 40 min ques.

Not quite... it seems to be gapers that insist upon getting out of bed at 7am to queue with 1000 other cars for an hour. Instead I can sleep in, head up there at 9am without doing 3 billion hill-starts, find a carpark up front from where someone has already left and through not being a groomer-bashing womble I can go ski perfectly good snow...
