The two aren't mutually exclusive

re: photos though - you (and my current prediciment!) has actually made me realise how much I've taken being on-snow for granted
I suppose having something for when the memories start to fade would be nice!

Thanks BP - you've inspired me to actually take some snaps if I get to the hill this season. Cheers

Hey Jude - I love that area! Often so untouched, quite, cant see any lifts, buildings, etc & can give such a solitary feeling only a few minutes from the hussle & bussle.

Yeah, it's really great - need to cut out back to the lifts at the right spot or you end up down at the Whakapaiti hut. You can see from that pic that lots had been out there that day.

Slightly off-topic: Does anyone have any pictures of scoria rock textures from Ruapehu/Ngaruhoe? I'm trying to find a good one for a new project. Ideally close-up shots of the rock textures, but I'm willing to consider anything that has a whole lot of rock and little else and could be used as a background texture. Any help would be much appreciated!

Funny - I've never taken the time to look but after seeing the pic, skiers right after the groomer is going to go on my todo list.

Roz (correct me if I'm wrong Jude) - the pic is taken after the traverse around from the valley to frontstage (oposite the cafe), then keep going across the top of backstage just before a little drop down into another gully (name?)

CCS et al. Yes, go under the Pinnacles via Frontstage and then around another spur to Backstage. Futher around past a really gnarly cliff band is The Policeman. On my to do list for this season. And all within 'bounds'. Truly would not go around there unless conditions right. Will always be there.

yeah totally. Just getting into Broken leg Gully is my fill

Just been looking at my pics to show the gully below where the Pinnicles platter used to be, cos someone asked if it was a doable line just above/nearish the drop to nowhere cliff band. I don't think I have EVER seen anyone go out that wide off the pinnicles. Be better to drop over the back?

Are you talking about Skippers Canyon? Have never heard/seen of anyone go over it intentionally. Some kids slipped and went over years ago when the platters used to be there. Think one of the four survived? It is sriously a long way down. I looked over it when i was up there in summer. You can hike up and go beind the Pinnacles to the Round the Mountain track. Serious hike and you'd want to do it with all the gears when the conditions were right/someone who knows where they are going. I'd get a professional guide for that first off. On my 'to do' list
Broken Leg Gully can be tricky to get into - often icy and as a creek runs under there can get crevasses.
Another goody is to drop into the Valley off the side of the Knoll (over the snow burm) or at the top over the valley waterfall.

I have heard of people doing this, sounds like a serious mission but one that could be well worth it if the conditions were right.

I've been up Sunset Ridge above the Pinnacles and looked over the side. Looked really good but you could see where there had been an avalanche so not a place to go with out prep/gear/training/right conditions.

You can see where you'd have to go to get to the Policeman by looking at this shot which doesn't show the cliff band (on left out of shot). The fear is in knowing what WILL happen if you slip over that cliff band cos it doesn't look like you can get much height on the traverse so you'd be right on the lip. Someome here might have done it - Edgehi?

So CCS - are you talking about continuing to traverse around the ridge or drop down into Skippers itself?
To me it would seem to be doale but I get the feeling you would end up in a very dreay, deep, dark, hole with a crap run out to the snow line

Now... the snow fields above the traverse to Policemans look interesting!

The traverse aint that bad itself, like you said, its knowing whats underneath thats the freaky bit! last year when I did it on my board, got most of the way round above the cliff, hit an icy patch and went for a bit of a slide! Luckily stoped in some soft snow before I reached the cliff!heart pounding stuff!
All these pics getting me pretty excited. I'd add some of my own but my PC with all my photos on it died last week Might have a few on my lappy, I'll have a look when I get home. Til then, keep em coming

We were looking at the Whppa trail map, where you can see that cliff drop to nowhere just on the edge of where the Pnnicles Platter used to be. They looked to left of this band and up on the left saw snowy looking chutes and asked if anyone went thru these? Well like you say - in the fogginess of my mind that hasn't been to Whppa since last September - I still envisage this as deep, dark, hole with a crap run out to the snow line

... and staying high to get to those "chutes" seemd like a massive mission considering you could detour along the way and do Policemans instead or drop over the back of pinnicles via sklyline if you really wanted a hike out

No one would want to drop into Skippers. It is a deep dark hole. I've looked over it from by Pinnacles lodge and it is straight down. Vertical and narrow at the bottom. Truly a canyon.

For every wind-polished crap-slab like that there is a strip of boot-deep windblown hiding behind a ridge just beyond the ski are boundary
