True, but as they say it looks like you're riding with a toaster on your head and they have a tendency to get knocked off. I'm leaning towards a Contour, especially cos then I can play with polarising filters and aftermarket lenses. Plus if you get the GPS one you can bluetooth it to an ipod touch/iphone and see the screen in real time.
Plan to get at least a couple in our crew this year and capture plenty of footage. Maybe get a sick close follow-cam off some cliffs with you this year jedski... would be a sweet shot and not one I've seen?
go for the chesty mount or attach the go pro to your ski pole and have it looking back at you..some very awesome looking vids on the go pro camera channel on you tube.
--------------------------------
oh pays to get the anti fog inserts too.
--------------------------------
looking at the vio hd or contour, didnt know you could add lenses?..ideally would like a canon7D but the budget says NO....anyone use any of the above?
not me..thou i have experience with go pro hd
--------------------------------
I'm looking at a Go-Pro HD as well for this year. Want something I can take diving as well and they are waterproof to 60m or something silly. That being said I need to get the flat lens mod and also probably a red filter for it.

Vio looks powerful but the whole hideaway brick thing would ruin my day a bit if I was hucking stupid stuff off big stuff.
Contour has a lens ring adapter that allows you to use 37mm lenses.

looks good..not sure if its waterproof though .."water resistant" hmmm?
thing i like about go pro is variety of mounts..theres about 8-10 different ones..can get roll bar, chest, wrist, helmet, headmount, surf mount, motorbike, car mount..etc.etc
--------------------------------
I like the go pro but contours are cheap ATM and I won't be as scared to lose it as ragdolls are going to happen.

The video footage above looks awesome, I am thinking Go Pro even though it doesn't look as good as contour (and GPS would be great for speed monitoring), you can use GOPRO underwater so more applications.

It was $499 for the Contour last night. Sale must have ended, d'oh!
depends where and when u get em..my go pro hd was $449 from R&R sport. T7 had them a while back for $399!
--------------------------------
only problem i see for contour is the output is boring..just shows snow moving past rapidly..u cant actually see yourself unless u are videoing some one else!
least with go pro the assorted mounts get at least part of your body and skis moving thru the snow or if u have on a pole..u get your whole body and what u just rode thru. Plus u can get mounts that face u too..ie in the basejump clips.
--------------------------------
pretty cheap

Be aware the Go-Pro comes in different versions. Most of the good footage are shot with the new HD-Hero, but there is also a GoPro 960 model which is slightly older and only shoots 720p.
However that is pretty cheap for the top version Freshie!

That GoPro is the HD Hero 1080. But I am happy paying the extra $50 for the GPS HD Contour I just picked up
--------------------------------
"If in doubt, straighten 'em out"
go pro hd hero 1080 is the top one in that range
--------------------------------
jedski..what did you pay..499? that was a very quick sale price or a misprint?
Yeah it was 499 last night but was gone by the time I looked again this morning.
this is the mount i use.."chesty" get a way better view than standard helmet mounts

--------------------------------
"If in doubt, straighten 'em out"
id say that would work..thats the one i use for go pro..well the non micro sd card anyway.
says u get 2gb car free and mag memory u can do is 32 gb
--------------------------------
But isn't the Micro SD way smaller than the SD?
--------------------------------
"If in doubt, straighten 'em out"
Try to get a Class 6 or Class 10. Class 4 is a little bit slow.

Out of interest - what do people think about TGR's light the wick being in 3D? Anyone seen this or heard from people who've seen it?

I've got it. On the DVD version there is a segment that you can choose to watch in anaglyph (red/blue) 3d. The effect is very cool, it's a park shoot and they have some very interesting angles and it makes a lot of the tricks look amazing. They're also releasing a version on 3d-bluray (non anaglyph) which should be really really good. But yeah, it's not like the whole thing is in 3d and to be honest it's not going to bring anything new to the table in terms of watching someone ski a massive spine in Alaska. It's damn cool for park though and if they could get some closeup shots of someone skiing a pow pillow line or similar it would be very, very cool.
Don't you just love the slightly superior and intellectual drawl of 80's doco commentary.
The national film archives (is that it?) on line are also absolutely brilliant, you can watch 'the leading edge' and such like.
that was one heck of a big summer tour party doing the crater climb too
Now this is going to be Epic

The backpack filming is sick. Will be aesy to mount the contour onto a pipe using my handlebar mount but the trick will be to create a frame that will fit precisly down mayby where my hydration bag goes against my back. hmmm
