Depends on 3 things:
1. Weather
2. Being able to scam some decent rock-hoppers
3. Not mysteriously going to Mt Ruapehu and hiking or something equally stupid (Mt Hutt anyone?!?!)

You can get a Jetstar return to Chch leaving tomorrow back Sun for $260 return. Add another $300 for ground transport/lift tickets. Lots of $ for a possible 'Mt Shut' experience. Manganui might be a better bet

Ruapehu is a national park mate You can go up there whenever you want. Even when it's closed, just don't expect the patrol to be raring to come save you if you hurt yourself out there.

If by claiming first tracks you mean smashing the shit out of your board on some rocks... although I dare say the cover is better now. Snow-forecast says Turoa could even be worth a hike on Sunday, if the road is open.

Ah thanks, just a thought. I know how dangerous it can be. I've been to Whakas when there was not snow and that was enough for my wife to hurt her ankle.
The 19th is pretty close now I guess I will just wait...

Well I'm going what ever the weather does, beats sitting at home and got flights for $120 return. If the mt is shut it just don't cost very much. Not to many rocks showing down south.

Only if it pukes like crazy this week. Takes a lot to fill the little valleys up top and they generally have to winch-cat runs like Snowbird. No snowmaking up there either.

I'll probably be up the hill either way. There's bound to be some nice stashes to be found.

I'd say giant down will be decent but the 6 wont be open next weekend. A Whaka no more than the express down before the school holidays and that will be pushing it before a big storm.

I'd say it's like 1.5 steps forward 1 back. They seem to be snowmaking furiously at the base and I dare say they were trucking snow to either the base or Clarie's track from Alpine Meadow. Plus I would say it's snowing fairly consistently up top. It's just the midfield that's kinda epic fail at the moment, but thanks to all the snow guns I would say by next weekend they'll have Boneyard at the very least sorted.

rozboon's opening weekend prediction (if the hill is open!) - Movenpick, Alpine Meadow, High Flyer and whatever the other crappy chair is. Park Lane, that's the one. I don't rate the odds of the Giant being open and the chance of the 6-pack running are slim to none, IMO.

extremely unlikely. Even if the snow comes in the next week or so, I'd doubt they'd have time to sort out avalanche control/trail safety bits and pieces on the high noon/giant/high flyer.

They'll be focusing all their energy on getting park lane, movenpick, alpine meadow and midfield sorted first. When they get those done, then they'll focus on the upper mountain, but I don't think they've got enough time.

By July I reckon they'll have probably all lifts open except for the Jumbo T.

Is the jumbo t ever open these days?

The pessimist in me is picking Alpine Meadow only.

You could be on the money. Should be called a partial opening. From the archives:

Earliest opening since 1992!
Posted on 12 June 2008 at 10:41 AM

This Saturday will be the earliest season opening day at Mt Ruapehu since 1992! We will be opening Happy Valley at Whakapapa and Alpine Meadow at Turoa thanks to our wonderful snowmaking crew who have been working day and night whenever conditions have allowed.

They run the jumbo t once there is snow, but they don't really bother making a t line since few people use it.
I'd be surprised if anything besides the meadow and happy valley is going before July. High flyer is possible but the other chairs need way more snow.

What you see is ice on lens!

First hand info relayed back is that the snow came at a cost with gales expected to expose the rocks. Not enough snow fell at either side to get to excited about BUT the snowmakers are in full swing. Looks good though for mid june.

No, even if there was loads of snow I would say they will not have the express open on openning day only by experience - they usually open it just in time for school holidays maybe the Thursday before it. But I usually fall into that same trap and give them the benefit of the doubt and then are dissapointed.

Looks like a big Anticyclone is going to park itself over NZ right thru to the weekend so at least the weather is looking good for Turoa to open on the 19th as anticipated. Midfield should be ok if they can work the snow guns hard out!

The dash in the Subey showed 0 degrees all the way to work this morning. And the damn automatic door on the garage wouldn't close due to icing, had to get out of the car and give it a helping pull ;/

EDIT: Ice/frost on the road around the Kelburn viaduct too, could feel the diffs in the car doing things I normally only get when driving, erm, spiritedly.

So much ice on car window I couldn't get it down (my cunning plan to scape the ice off that way didn't work). Think it was so thick because it rained last night then the lot froze. Another southerly due through tonight.
