Looks like it could be raining now Whakapapa side. Hard to see from the webcams but I don't think they've had a huge dump. I'd say lower mountain only, depending on how they get on with snow making.

Forecast is for some high winds for the weekend possibly as well, and for average weather Sunday. I'm still heading north for a break with the lady and will decide if i head up or not on the day mst likely.

Don't think it snowed today judging by the cams but a decent amount overnight according to Ruapehu website, every bit helps

Hey guys
What are the predictions for Mardi Gras weekend, full mountain open?

My prediction is that there will be a lot of wombles, a lot of injuries and a lot of hangovers. As usual the Saturday (if open!) will be chaos but the sunday will be pretty quiet in the AM at least.

From what I have seen they usually try to get the Six running by then even if it is just to accss snowbird and the bowls...but we will see how much snow we get.

I will be very surprised if the six opens at Turoa on Saturday and even more if the upper maountain at whakapapa opens on day one. Talk is they wont open the upper mountain until the new cafe toilets are finished and that the temporary cafe will be in use for most of the season.
Be nice to get some tracks in on the upper mountain before the school holiday rush starts though.

Just found this thread, nice one!
Exams at Vic will keep me from opening day on the 19th, will be interesting to see what happens there.
Heading up for 10 days on the 27th though, so praying not to have to do too much rock-hopping.
The snow showers keep coming, but the wind is kind of concerning.

From the Ruapehu Avalanche Advisory this evening

Over the past 48hrs there has been between 20cm and 40cm of new snow with larger drifts up to 80cm from 2000m and above. Assessments have shown that most new snow layers still have easy to moderate shears with a slight wind crust existing below 2300m. With the early season conditions lots of rock anchors are still visible however do not be fooled as there are isolated pockets of wind loaded snow that could avalanche. These are predominantly to be found in the aspects facing North through to the Southwest.

There was quite a bit of snow falling on Sunday and hopefully Monday, the road to Turoa was closed at the 9km on Sunday arvo. But this was Whakapapa on Saturday (just above the start of the waterfall chair), was hard to find any snow to be honest.....it's amazing how fast it fills up though, especially with the snowmaking that will be had over the next few days thanks to the massive high.

Latest rumor I heard is the Cafe wont be finished until Aug/Sept!

Why do they need toilets to open the upper mountain ? There are toilets at Hutt Flat and the West Cafe, people with week bladders can F&^k Off to Happy Valley!

Why are the toilets not ready? RAL/Stanley/TPP started during the end of last season dragging s*it up the runs, f&*@ing the snow up, and even with all that early prep cant get toilets ready!

Why did they remove they toilets from the Temp Cafe before the others were ready ?

Plenty of time to rest on the chairs IMO. But shhhhh on that one. I hear the lattes at the RAL cafes are the best around so go get em while they're hot!

Heard ages ago the cafe wouldn't be ready but didn't know they had removed the temp toilets. How dumb is that. If it is true will make a big dent in income (and reputation) if upper mountain not open - can't push everyone around to Turoa. If upper mountain no go, I'll have to spend my time on the lower slopes learning to snowboard. Play on the the dark side for a while.......

This is it! On a busy day your likely to spend 5-10 minutes (or more if one side is closed or your at Mt Hutt LOL) waiting for a lift. 5 or more minutes spent sitting, resting and amping for the next run and then another 5 minutes riding. Then repeat until knackered!!!

My groms do drag me back a bit coz they want to have a pot of chips and a moro bar but even then I can usually slip my 12 year old $20 and get another run in while they chill out a scoff some over expensive RAL food down. Then its .. ok dads back time to strap up and hit the slopes again

Why yes removing the temp toilets was gumpy if they have actually removed them, just relying on whaka boarder here. Turoa with a million holiday makers, no thanks. Trying to find another pair of straits for me. get my retro on making 47 too many turns on the rockgarden

I'm not too concerned about queues. I thought last year was quite quiet, possibly due to the recession. Compared to 2008 which I remember waiting 30 minutes for the valley T some days.

Being a uni student and stacking your timetable so you have bugger all on a tuesday/wednesday and nothing on a friday is the way to go.

Parents are immensely proud of you and you get to ski ski 4-5 days a week (if you can afford it)!!

Posted on 15 June 2010 at 11:03 AM

It will be an early start to the season for the Alpine Meadow at Turoa this season with an early opening on this Thursday the 17th. Join us up here for a few turns, scrape the summer wax off the gear and get yourself ready for the season with some early winter fun!

Snowmaking and trail preparation has commenced on the upper mountain, lifts will progressively open as conditions allow.

To top all of this excitement off, there is even more snow falling today, all the way down to Ohakune! Patrol is skinning their way up to the snow stake right now and we will let you know what the result is as soon as they gets there!

See you all up here very very soon!"

Its all under control things will work out at whakapapa you will see!

They have done a fantastic job given the working conditions at altitude and the short time space to build two buildings in, especially in light it took them a couple of years to build the original knoll cafe.

Indeed given they got the staff intro training out of the way last week they had a nice window to work with an earlier opening. Sure there will be a lot of people stocked to have a play on the Alpine Meadow. Who knows they may pick up enough experiance to take on the six when it opens

Well Turoa will be all good but I'd hate to think how busy it will be if the upper mountain at whaka isn't open for the school holidays. 15000 people would be chaos. After everyone decides whaka is not worth it. If they don't open the upper mountain at whaka they need to get the jumbo t going early.
If lifts and massive base buildings can be built in time for June why can't a cafe?

Differance in building was that one was built from scratch the other was modified and pre built.

The upper mountain at whakapapa will only open if there is enough snow anyways. Such talk is nonsense to say they wont up because of there not being toilets.

They will be ready in time for the upper mountain being open even if they got to use the builders porta loos up there. Oh forgot about them...duh.

School Holidays are three weeks away, opening day two weeks! the building was finally sealed a couple of weeks ago. Thats the target to be ready by and if they are not they will have to look at alternatives called plan B.

Ruapehu haven't updated their info on their website regarding the snow base yet they said they would as soon as they got the reading, so its 80cms at the giant? thats not too bad is it?

Thats what I was going to say but with a twist.... Patrol is skinning their way up to the snow stake right now and we will let you know what the result is as soon as they gets there! SO they are still skinning up? Wonder how long it will take surely they know there are people who read with anticipation?
