now.... which board to take? ![]()
just heard a nasty rumour about a tower..hopefully all bs
--------------------------------
you gotta get up ...to get down..
since it's only a rumour...do you mind sharing some more?![]()
well it seems a wee bit of wind and snow build up on one of the express towers at turoa has caused it to lean or fall over...seems pretty outrageous given the size of the towers but you never know, suspect it will be news tomorrow or some one is having a big laugh![]()

Are you any good at hiking??
Suppose this rumour is true, how difficult is this to fix? Would they have to order another tower?
Rumour?, what rumour are we talking about??

I don't believe it.. those towers are built to withstand much more than a little ice think of how much gets pasted on to them in the aug storms

Believe It. Take the red pill.....
Would be good if RAL could confirm this
ok have had it confirmed ...tower damaged 2 weeks to repair ...which means it will be running about the same time as it should have been anyway...

Oh well, I won't be up for at least another week and a bit after this weekend.
Sucks to hear about the damage though this close to opening.

2 weeks?
Scoop.co.nz had this from an interview with Mike Smith, RAL Marketing Manager...
The opening of the High Noon Express at Turoa will be delayed due to damage to a section of a lift tower sustained overnight after the natural release of ice on the cable caused it to whip lash.
Mt Ruapehu has commitment from the lift manufacturer, and a New Zealand based supplier to produce a replacement section very quickly. Weather conditions on the mountain are extremely poor today but preliminary inspection of the lift shows no other damage.

That sucks. I would of thought the heavier storms of the last couple of years would have put a lot more strain on the towers than the relatively light falls of the last week or so.
Oh well. 2 weeks is nothing to fix something of that size and scale. It'll give me heaps of time to lap the high flyer and get my park skills up to scratch!
I thought the express has a slow crawl function they engage in snow storms to prevent ice build up to avoid this very scenario.

thats what I thort aswell as the chairs get put away...probably 'didnt get around to geting up there to turn it on

The slow crawl function is not used as the build up of ice is too fast for the system to manage. If they were to run it over night it would have to be at a high speed and then a staff member or 2 would be required in case of issues. (which have happend in the past). Again the mighty Pehu says not on my mountain thanks; sorry Dopple this is NZ not the Alps ![]()
So 2 weeks = 4 to 6 in RAL time? So disappointing that I'm glass half empty.....oh, but I'll be at Whaka so glass half full
As long as zillions more don't descend on the place......

Can someone post the pic of the tower up? I know there is one lurking around somewhere.
Man you guys really don't have much trust in RAL do you?? In my opinion, it's the only Mt I can afford to ride, otherwise I'd be tripping to the south Island. I understand they have better conditions to ride down there, but hey, I can't afford it. Sounds like a number of you can't afford weekly trips to the SI either, so for me, I'm thankful that there is even a place to ride up this end of the country. I'm thankful to RAL for all the hard work they put in over the winter to make it what we have. Sure mishaps occur, but hey, look at the SI post, everyone down there is complaining also. So who wins?? I dunno.

Agree. Wasn't complaining, they do a good job considering but they need to be a little more realistic with timelines. Underpromise and over deliver

But, looks great.
does it really matter?
u can just check back here instead of going to geonet![]()
--------------------------------
doesn't matter when it's sunny and you can see, but when it's foggy my browser has to load boring grey pics
ok..have made a thread with 5 webcams shots..so ppl can check whenever they feel like.
Blunt could make it permanent?
--------------------------------
are there any other webcams addresses for south island that change hourly?

Just had a cheeky look at the cams. Both fields are looking preety good, so long they keep those snow guns cranking its guna be a pretty damn good first couple of weeks.

Just to stir the lift damage pot, a quiet rumour has it that one of the towers is, erm, not standing up any more.
EDIT: Looking at the cams, the cable is very clearly not on the towers either...

I heard a rumour that they would be basing all the groomers at the Giant cafe and running a cat ski operation on the upper mountain until it is fixed.
Nah, just kidding, they always seem to have problems with that lift at the start of the season.
I wonder if they will be able to run the T instead? (can you even get to it without the 6 seater running)

Oh I caught all the stuff above, it's just from the media report on scoop they made it sound like it was just a bit of damage to the crosstree (is that the term? the top of the tower) or something, like last year when the cable did a similar ice-release-twang. But from what I'm hearing now, it sounds like a tower has fallen over and timeframe to repair it is less than ideal and very weather dependent due to the required involvement of a helicopter...

Perhaps it's time for me to go to the dark side and start boarding. Walking in ski boots is no fun.
