Ruapehu 2010
Roz, the tower is bent in a big way, yes
I wonder if they will be able to run the T instead? (can you even get to it without the 6 seater running)
yes you can easily, just nip over to it from the giant cafe
I have also been thinking about that and that helicopters may be involved but with the snow now here they could drag it up the trail and then winch it into position maybe? A bit trickier but would not be so weather dependent.

Just to stir the lift damage pot, a quiet rumour has it that one of the towers is, erm, not standing up any more.
Unless it is below the cafe it all looks pretty straight.
I'd have imagined that if a tower had fallen across the hill (i.e. the way the wind was blowing) it would have taken the cable off all the runners on that side untill at least the cable hit the ground.
EDIT: just saw your post CCS. Bent - thats pretty fkn weired damage! Heard anymore detail if its the tree bent or the foundation shifted, etc?

No walking required you drop down into the whynots from giant cafe and cut across.

Wouldn't they be too big to drag up? Quite a blow for them. But the Giant/Jumbo combo will serve the upper mtn when there's enough snow. Queues will be challenging

Would be interesting since 3/4 of people at turoa don't ever ride the jumbo even when there is no que and 20 min on the express.
What a buggar. Spose its better to happen now than mid season.
Looks like I'll have to learn to ride a T after all ![]()

the Jumbo is a whole lot easier to learn on than the High Noon T was, with it's steep lurch upwards after takeoff.

Lol, what are those people doing there?
*edited 16 Jun 2010 14:54
@ Blunt - I would say they are still assessing the guts of the repair?
This is the best excuse they have had in years - normally they don't even have an excuse why the express is not going at the start of the season. (Couple of weeks with Giant & Flyer is normal) In my opinion.
Oh but I still cant wait - love Ruapehu too, it is like Wellington on a good day (not enough of the 'em)

ummm sometimes there is not enough SNOW at the start of the season?! No excuses in that.

Funny I thought there would be more snow above the giant than below it?
OK has anyone EVER been on the top lift at Turoa on an opening day? (incl the Noon T bar)

you can count on that happening. Like always happens when the express is not going. Either the express is going and the weather is crap or it's perfect weather and snow they take most of the day to get the express going.

lol, I'm getting into a new job in less than 2 weeks. I will leave this current job in style, going for a long weekend at Ruapehu. I hope the weather helps
Tower, schmower......
It'll be fixed soon enough.

Wait For The Ricochet
I'm heading up sunday, if there's decent runs I'll be stoked but if not I'll just hike somewhere and make a jump to muck around on. Won't be worrying too much about long trips this early on in the season but I figure it'll satisfy me for a little while. Will be interesting to see what the setup is for opening, I figured Movenpick for access then the Flyer and Express but I don't think that will happen somehow ![]()

Too early. Not enough snow to build the t-line. Cable probably not even on.

Hi, I don't know if any of you are aware of this one, or even care for that matter, but I have just managed to find a webcam updated every 15min from a guys house in Ohakune looking direct up to the mt.

The Alpine Meadow Sundkid Carpet lift will operate today for the first time in 2010!!! Brush off the skis and snowboards and come up for a turn or two. The Turoa Snow School is operating today for Discover ski and board lessons.
We are making snow and working on trails on the upper mountain. We hope to make a decision on further facilities on Friday morning. Watch this space!!
The cams show a couple of people going up the 'Pick so the midfield can't be too far away!

The good news is the snow cover for this time of the year is excellent as illustrated in attached photos taken today around the site of the damaged tower.
Surely this is bad news because the lift will be out for 3-4 weeks therefore the great snow coverage will not be taken full advantage off?

here is the full size image
It appears to have sheared at the splice bolts,
What worries me is that the real reason this tower has collapsed is due to the accumulated fatigue from previous whiplash ice release events, topped off by the current whipping. So what of the rest of the lift?
The end stations/bullwheels must have sustained absolutely massive shock loadings from these.
The other towers?
The cable!
Good Luck RAL, I hope repairs go well.

Tell that to the wombles that use it... it will shorten lift lines for sure

In a nutshell, yes. Bootpacking from the Giant is now a very realistic option.
If they have the ts going at whaka going by early july and the high noon is still broken I'll just go there. All the good runs are above the giant and whaka has better mid mountain runs.
