Amazing opening weekend. Top marks to RAL for pushing so hard to get it all open.

Well, yeah. Top half of the old second chair

Which became the 3rd (Knoll Ridge) chair

Which became the National Downhill chair....

Didn't the second chair go from Hut Flat to the top of the Knoll Ridge??, and then get cut back to stop at the old cat shed?
Someone should write a book about the lift systems on Ruapehu over the years, like the book 'White Gold' on Mount Hutt, i'm sure it would sell well.
Or is there a book already?......

There is a book. Have a copy at my club. Was put out for Tongariro park centenary I think. The doco was made by Joh Ball. Interesting - talks about the chair at Whaka that fell down in an ice storm within weeks of opening/installation.

Looks promising...
We are working towards having the Movenpick and High Flyer operational for Sunday the 20th of June for those who are looking for a little more terrain than our currently operational Sunkid Carpet on the Alpine Meadow. We are optimistic on opening additional upper mountain facilities through the week with the snow forecast on Monday & Tuesday.

Yes I think so. Can't remember name of book. Will look next time at club. They used to run 'cat' (ie tractor) trips to crater. Made up for the hours you had to wait to get on lifts if you weren't a RAL shareholder. Happy Valley and National/West (by Down Hill Ski Club) were run buy different concessions.

No longer allowed under the gift arrangements from local iwi (Maori tribe who gifted the sacred peaks of Tongariro National Park to the people of NZ). Same reason you don't have heliskiing there. Hiking it makes it more worthwhile IMO - get a huge sense of achievement

Won't be into gift area though. Understand High Noon and proposed Knoll go into gift area - just - but can get away with it as 'replacement' lifts.

Yeah, I agree with you. I had a failed 2 hour hike up to the crater lake (we ended up somewhere else) but it was really awesome. Best ride for me so far. Next time I will make sure we take off from the top of the Far West T

Yeah, that was my one goal for the season. But my main chance is first week of the school holidays (I'm a teacher) and don't think I could manage the walk up the High Noon before even starting the rest of the way. Would be a massive achievement though!

I'd pay extra for cat skiing from the summit down to the bottom of the glacier on a good day, could make them a heap of money. $20 per trip would be well worth it on a powder day.

Looks like reasonable snow in the forecast for the next few days. Warm as in Welly today - 17 deg on car temp gauge
Warm rain looks like it has washed away a fair bit of cover midfield at Turoa.
Early days though......patience.....

Take some shovels and go for a walk, made what could have been crap into a great fun day for us.

Scooby, I'll be up there that weekend but probably won't go to Mardi Gras itself... heard a few horror stories. A friend of a friend has just opened a bar at the Junction though so we might drop in there and check out the scene.

Just a little step down, maybe 20ft odd if you popped hard. At about the altitude of the snowmaking pond, just around from the 3 or 4 snowguns clustered on that ridge. It's probably washed away by now in this rain... well the kicker itself probably hasn't considering how much snow went into it but the run-up is without a doubt going to be rocks and plants by now.

yep, Rob and I hiked to the giant cafe on Saturday, more of a fitness game than anything, but the snow was a bit nicer up there too.

Sunday was a write off, went for a look and the waterfall on Mangawhero Corner of Clarry's was cranking.

Has it snowed yet? I've been stuck in a windowless room all day and haven't looked outside...
