Went to Whppa for a look. Had my first chairlift ride for the season into Happy Valley to see what was going on there. Felt naked with nothing on my feet tho. Oh well, quiet night at home with the flatties, bf, and muppy dog, and see what tomorrow brings. Was dumping big wet snow for an hour as I left the hill. So pretty.

The midfield cam is looking a bit whiter! Lets just hope that the ice on the top cams is because of massive amounts of snow! This time next week will I be riding the High Noon? Fingers and toes are crossed...

Hi all. Online on vodem so going lightening speed. Probs getting dial up to work. Sigh. Telecom. Got my stuff up the hill on the Rockie on Friday thanks to the boys at RAL who took pity on me. Started the Rockie chair just for me Sweet. Baked some cinnamon pinwheels to say 'thanks'. Been snowing quite hard last 24 hr. Wet stuff though. Was fine here at Whaka before lunch, then rain and now heavy snow. Skiied down Rockie to take skis to shop. Marginal, added a few more scratches to be fixed. Bad first run. Track cut up by feet and cat. Maybe tomorrow I'll get to HV which was looking a bit sad yesterday but should be better with snow in last 24hr.

Pretty avearage. Left after 3 hours. only the the upper freeway down past the cafe under the express open then the traverse back to the flyer. Was good snow though. was first up there so first 2 runs sublime and then was still ripable at high speed after its been carved as there was only one ice slick

I had my first board lesson at 10 on Alpine, fell right on my tailbone . Then (somehow) managed to get on the lift and
amazingly off it in one piece! And had a go skating on a nice flatish soft area.

Think i may need a donut cushion at work though

you just gota be good at dogging rocks, after 3 and a bit years a ruapehu I've only got minor scratches and chips, but those rocks can be nasty, even ice rocks can do lots of damage. You can do more damage when you stuff a rail up and slam the edge of your board into it.

Yea but when you they are underlying late season and you are making under 4 turns and landing 2 airs in a run they can come up rather quick alright...

I was up Turoa today. Wasn't too bad apart from not being able to see a damn thing for most of the day.

Had some good fun skier's left of High Flier and left side of Yahoo, when I wasn't skiing into ditches I couldn't see. Maybe 10-15cm of wierd crust over wet pow.

Skier's left of Freeway was good fun, plenty of little lips to pop off but you had to thread the needle between rocks.

When we headed down for lunch we went for a bit of a mission out towards the Jumbo, started by almost skiing into the 10 odd metre canyon that is currently Why Not, after getting across that we scored some really nice turns, again in 10-20cm of wierd crusty powder-slush. Out skier's right of the Jumob T-bar. Cut back in at the 'closed' rope above Mangawhero gully, on to Boneyard, which was predictably... bony. Picked a line down to the bottom, middle section of Clary's track is more dirt than snow (just below the snowmaking pond... might be more there now)

Park is just a big valley so I don't expect that to be up for a while.

The snow above the top of the High Flyer was really quite nice, a lot drier than down low, I would call it Rua-powder I guess. Hopefully it hangs around in some form for when they get the Express running again.

Was there (Turoa) yesterday. Jumped on one of the first lifts and then called it by lunchtime when the fog turned to wet mist. It was good that there was no wind Sat night cos the snow stuck evenly-ish without major windstriping/drifting that can happen in a storm. So we picked our lines skiers left of the upper freeway off the groom. Really enjoyed the runs through there. Only a couple of hidden rocks and nothing too major to need to dodge. The run down was ok too, except for that 2nd to last bend in Clarry's where it was stony and I thought fukkit and unclipped for a few steps.

Right.. well Take 2. Looks like I'll be heading up for this weekend. They didn't have any of the Hot Rod 95's so I've been trying some Nordica Sport Machine 90's instead which feel pretty good, and will hopefully have enough flex not to kill me hiking in them

Hopefully should get some more snow mid-week and make for an epic weekend. Forecast currently has Saturday looking okay, but Sunday might be a bit of a wash.

Police can restrict access for usal Policeman type things (i.e. public safety around erupting volcano's)
DOC can restrict access for what ever purposes they need to (although I belive they have a lot of hoops to jump through interally)

Am I spoutting BS again anyone?

National Parks Act 1980 No 66 (as at 01 November 2008), Public Act

Part 1 National parks

4 Parks to be maintained in natural state, and public to have right of entry
(1) It is hereby declared that the provisions of this Act shall have effect for the purpose of preserving in perpetuity as national parks, for their intrinsic worth and for the benefit, use, and enjoyment of the public, areas of New Zealand that contain scenery of such distinctive quality, ecological systems, or natural features so beautiful, unique, or scientifically important that their preservation is in the national interest.
(2) It is hereby further declared that, having regard to the general purposes specified in subsection (1) of this section, national parks shall be so administered and maintained under the provisions of this Act that—
(e) Subject to the provisions of this Act and to the imposition of such conditions and restrictions as may be necessary for the preservation of the native plants and animals or for the welfare in general of the parks, the public shall have freedom of entry and access to the parks, so that they may receive in full measure the inspiration, enjoyment, recreation, and other benefits that may be derived from mountains, forests, sounds, seacoasts, lakes, rivers, and other natural features.

What an awesomely worded piece of legislation.

Essentially, yes, you can go for gold up there as long as you aren't adversely affecting the park. Just don't take your lift pass and don't tell them who you are o__O (Except the polite thing would be to register your intent with Patrol)
Don't expect a lot of sympathy if you get into trouble up there though. RAL have a kind of implied duty (although NO formal duty AFAIK) to help in any kind of SAR operation up there so it's in their interests (and possibly yours too) to try and stop people going up there when the conditions are a bit naff.
That said, part of me would rather they didn't tell you that you outright can't do it.

You mean your RFID pass - you're stuffed if they have a scanner on them I doubt they'd bother scanning you though. Presumably it's because they are running around in trucks and groomers moving snow about.

Your mate can always go for a hike outside the skifield boundaries, plenty of options there and nobody to stop them.

Most people will do anything an authoritative person in a uniform asks them. And plenty of people on here have commented in the past about the traffic cop nature of ski patrol in particular but RAL trail/field staff more generally.
A long time ago a friend on mine was chased by a patroller from the far west all the way back to the ski school A-frame to revoke his pass.
Like you said - if you wanted to they'd have to make an effort. Depends how much motivation you give them.
I have only ever had 2 'ski nazi' experances I can remember with RAL staff but by and all, if you talk to them they know what your about and everyone's fine.
If you look at it through their eyes would seeing your mate clomping up the hill = potential rescue? Thats the usual motivation for their 'requests'.

Absolutly fnk right rozboon - boarders on the inspirational, could be the basis of our constitution! Its almost a calling to the people of NZ to get out there and use it... NOW!

Paranoid

Had a look myself just seems you are the ones always looking for the negative aspects in anyones posts but it is ok if you post negative or provocative comments.

Leave it alone and move on before you find yourself at the wrong end of a court order.
