Great day at whaka again, making 5 in a row. Highlights so far have to have been seeing "someone" get told off for wayward ski poles and called buddy even though female, hiking above Valley t with impreza, (oddly) seeing a random patch of yellow snow, riding with two far more experienced boarders and learning alot in a small time. Lastly, taking time
To help some fellow lodge members with there boarding.

Another bluebird day at Whaka. The snowmakers have been going for solid for a week now. Hope the forecaast snow comes, getting a bit boring. But Out West opened yesterday and I hear that there is some good stuff to be found. Apparently the traverse is a bit gnarly - like the old days I'm told

Its good to be able to pass skills you learn down to people of lower ability and watch them progress. I rememeber the key things I was told in every lesson
from day one and am able to pass the tips on. Even what I was told as a first day beginner came back to me when at the top of a Super G racecourse and that was Relax. There was so much I learnt though that I did not get from ski school.
Videos, books and gut feeling played a part in my learning progression too.

Actually merry it's perfect for the snow to arrive at the end of the holidays.
So long as snowmaking has Happy Valley, rock garden and express OK (and equivalent @ turoa) then all families need is fine weather to go home with a smile on their faces. RAL is smiling too, and that's important.
As soon as the holidays are over the next wave of punters expect more of the upper mountain and not so much of the lower.
So I vote for blue sky till friday night then DUMP.

Skied out west yesterday. It was far more fun than I expected, including the quad chair. A small amount more snow will make it hugely better too.
I didn't go near black magic, so no info there.

or nasty wet misty claggy etc etc etc

Ahhahah I don't think so! Got told off yesterday by some anti "mono-skier" for breaking the lift line rules, when old mate was busy prattling away and not moving into the line. I offered him some much uneeded sarcasm.

Hiked to the crater from the west tee in the afternoon. Snow conditions up top were magic.

We came back across Organ Pipes from Solitude on Sunday (by the way Solitude was AMAZING, warp speed fresh tracks and nobody except your mates in sight)
Pretty nasty in the lower chutes. The east-facing (west side) face was/is COMPLETELY wind-stripped, I'm talking the hardest thing possible without it being blue. You could just barely hold an edge at full side-slip.
The west-facing side was covered in rubble that had blown over the cliff-band above it.
I'd give it another couple of weeks, or some significant snowfall.

The other spot we tried was Hamilton's Face - Stripped. The traverse into it almost had me shizzing my pants. Maybe later. A couple of good pockets of windblown, saw patrol blasting it in the morning too. Mostly up around the ridge in the lee of the cornice/cliff band. At least you could bomb out the bottom without too much trouble.

I did organ pipes to lower exit on Sunday not good at the bottom. Traverse back no problems on the normal track can make it with out unstrapping. Then headed out to Glacier and got first tracks out there was pretty good actually, but quite a few moments where you don't want to lose your edge or a long walk out with lots of ice burn!
Monday did Eagles beak and was pretty crap and like Roz said pretty solid heading back but if you know how to keep an edge and not panic when sliding on it then it is okay.

But you can get more weight on the smaller effective edge length and therefore more bite.

Although for healside it can be hard for any great distance.....

Got caught on ice shelf on windstripped Bypass at Turoa last Saturday, legs were screaming at the bottom. Trick is not to panic and take it slow IMO. Definitely keen to get MTX on my next board for Ruapehu's conditions.

There was an article in the Dompost this morning (cant find link on stuff yet) about Turoa having the best week in its history numbers-wise. Something like 45,000 in 5 days projected to hit 57,000 or so by week's end. Bit of money for RAL's coffers but hopefully the crowds don't hang around for too long!

There has to be a point of diminishing returns for how much bite you get for the pressure you exert over the shorter total edge length on a board. Your edges will still only go so far into hardpack.

The grip you get from two skis on edge (from casual observation and limited snowboarding) seems quite a lot higher than a snowboard.

Not that it really matters if the snow is decent anyway.

Wasnt colder at Turoa today. Just had a bit of a chill in the wind and was sweating like hell when I reached the wintergarden on the way down. Only tracks to be had today was a few windblown pockets and some alright wind hamered stuff that all the holiday makers were too afraid to venture to. Hardly anyone at Turoa today.
Bring on the snow, things getting a wee bit borring and icy.

Japanese fluff The snow on that tower probably weighs about 3 grams...

Actually based on the fact that the skiers aren't getting around looking like legless wonders I'm going to assume that was actually quite wet 'warm' storm snow. Fluff doesn't stick to trees like that, you'll know what I mean when you get over there and ski directly through a 1m high 'wall' of snow as if it wasn't there.
