yeah im always hating on skiers cause its the cool thing to do![]()

I'm a boarder and I reckon going with a skier is better if they will have you ha ha, two boards just bang together I find, I'm goofy so if I go on the left I face away from skier and all is gravy =P
Rozboon re your missing ACL, hills are the killer, I have to zigzag down my drive with baby steps and I haven't had an ACL for 13 years....
hahaha T-riffic!
Most of my days will be at Turoa this season so no real need to T it but I wanna be complete man ![]()

Lael my point is about learning tbars, i'll ride with skiers if its busy or they're mates but would rather go solo or with a natural foot boarder![]()

It's not missing (yet? haha) - I skied like 18 days on it in Japan and it just hurt a fair bit in the evening. I just have a nagging suspicion it's in a semi-intact and probably deteriorating state
MRI this week, I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone for the tax dollars that are helping to pay for it
Good luck with the ACL I hope its good news!!!
I have another appt with my specialist next week to find out my next step, had Meniscus fixed in Jan and now he wants to fix ACL as cartilage damage is far worse than expected, however this is all interfering with Canada and Japan plans...
Hmmmmmm

The good news is they can be fixed/replaced. Lael - how come you haven't had it done? Obviously doesn't affect your boarding? People say boarding easier on knees but I can't see it - being in that fixed position looks hideous for a knee (when you have to take back foot out of binding and shuffle forward)plus all that falling on the knees. Ouch.

Way rather go up T-Bars with another boarder over skier, natural or goofy is ok with me, I find skiers try to control the steering way to much and we clip rails pretty much all the way up where as boarders just go with the flow of the track and its a lot less of a workout.
Between the legs behind the knee takes most of the dodgyness out of it for me.

its very easy on a board, but riding with a skier makes it nay on impossible. between the legs is the key, not sliding up your a3s cause the skier nest to ya is too tall/short
Suits me - happy not to ride the T with a boarder![]()

I was refferring to learning to ride a tbar. the way you worded your comment made you come across as an oldscool, snowboarders are lepers kinda guy. apologies if this isnt the case. so why are you happy not to ride ts with boarders?
I'll hoot skiers or boarders if they're throwing down and abuse both if they're hitting the rail ramps in the park like jumps and participating in general gaper behavior. no bias here
@ Brighton.
I did years of boarding, Pumpa. Soft & hard rigs. Eventually split the difference and settled on BX boards as the best for all terrain.
All you lot that profess to preferring to ride with boarders, that's cos you know how to do it. I'm just talking about getting someone started. The fact that the skier does the steering is precisely the point, that allows the learner boarder to concentrate on relaxing (yeah, i know that's a contradiction) and stance.
All you folk that 'stick it between your legs' well what can I say? I love it when you talk dirty!

yes pairing up a learner with an arrogant skier and having the tbar sliding up there back the whole way is a great start to life

I really did mean riding the T. Don't want any more injuries, chance of falling off T higher with boarder/skiier combo, so avoid the situation. I think boarding has been good for snowsports - revived the sport and brought new technology for skiing. Toyed with swapping to boarding because people say easier on the knees but have too much invested in ski gear now and don't want to going back to Happy Valley and falling over + more injury. My skiing days will be truly over if I blow the ACL for a THIRD time. Would be gutted.

ok jude i apologise for twisting your words. so you too agree the boarder/skier combo is not ideal on a tbar?
all the best with the knees mate, cant comment on whether boarding easier on knees, must be easier on ya feet though![]()

Gaper, generally named after the GAPing GAP between their helmet and goggles. At least that's how I understand it.
Usually the kind of people that do things like carve down the park, jump the little up-ramps for rails (teehee so guilty of this... I fail @ rails), ski in jeans, tuck pants into boots, don't wear gloves, snowblade, don't do up the booster strap on their boots, comment loudly about the high quality of this powder while skiing a wind-stripped groomer, ski off the end of the loading platform on the High Noon Express, fall over getting off the express then sit there laughing, tuck while pizzaing, lose snowboards that then hoot off down the hill, or ask me if my skis are trick skis for doing tricks on.
These are all examples from roughly 2 hours skiing at Turoa ![]()
Sounds more like Whaka, Rozboon. Turoa people too cool for that ![]()

Jude - just found out last year that I didn't have one after my other knee got hurt boarding (its fine now), and Ive only been riding for 3 years so I have started to notice the injury more.
So you say you have had 2 replacements already? I think that's part of the reason im not rushing to get it done, ive just started boarding and it would put me out for a whole year and if I have managed this long with out it I reckon I can go a bit longer, only problem is cartilage is almost worn to the bone...
rozboon - think I could check a few of those things off my list ha ha

Confessional time is it people? Haha...
Add to the list if you like.
Hmm what else is there, stereotypical gaper-tastic things... (all things I've seen at Turoa... gaper central? Happy Valley and Alpine Meadow are exempt, noobs will be noobs.)
-Knocking over every. single. pair. of skis/boards on a rack
-Taking out an instructor (heh, my friend did that back when we were gaper-tacular)
-Furiously trying to stomp your foot back into a binding with the heel-piece raised, and then succeeding
-Waddling across the paving stones at the base area, with skis on
-Wearing a bum-bag/fanny-pack
-Losing a pole because you're not using your pole straps (exemptions for if you're doing something insane)
-Dropping a pole from the lift
-Losing a SKI from the lift
-Falling over when you turn around to see why the patroller is shouting at you (because you're skiing through the park)
-Crashing into a banana boat (aka sled) - bonus points if it has someone injured in it
-Lining up for the Express with 8 people
-Getting cleaned out by the barrier arms on the Giant (guilty as charged, your honor)
-Trying to ski over a queue rope, catching it instead which then tips over the rubbish bin it's tied to
-Getting hit in the head by the Movenpick because you bent over to do up your binding, right in front of the chair.
-Colliding with a trail-safety guy
-Crashing into a SLOW sign, because you were going to fast. (Bonus irony points)
-Wearing non-waterproof outwear
-Skiing without ANY eyewear
-Breaking your wrist the first time you go snowboarding, because you were too cool for wrist-guards
-Getting banana-boated for a hideously insignificant injury
I'm sure there's heaps more...
EDIT:
Gaper... I choose you!
haha I'm feeling a heck of a lot better actually.
Most of my gaper gaffs have been loading or unloading on the chairs.
Took a very lovely blonde lass out unloading off the Giant last season. Her boyfriend didn't look to happy. Lucky I'm a big focker (not).
I also failed to make it onto the High Flyer my 2nd time at Turoa. I kinda got squeezed against the left hand side arm of the chair by a skier and as the chair lifted I went up and then fell off the damn thing. DOH! No injury just seriously dented ego. Funny how when I went to reload I ended with on a chair all by myself ![]()
--------------------------------
If you don't like my fire don't come around.
Mmmmm
Being one of 5 people lining up (and getting on!) the West Ridge Quad
Randomly falling over (duck and cover) as about to get on Giant, leaving 8 year old beginner niece to negotiate her own way off the icy ramp at the top.
Getting yelled at by park rats for carving up in park (just following the ski host I was with)
--------------------------------
reine de l'hiver
I also remember unloading off the Happy Valley chair a bit out of control 1st day on the Mountain and slammed into these two lovely South African ladies. They swore at me in Africaans (spl?) which was a real nice way for me to ask where they were from and have a chat to them. They were very nice and I complemented them on their very good rugby team. My son didn't look to impressed with me though ![]()

Good lord. A ski host did that... should be punished by decapitation to be honest.
I don't think people appreciate how dangerous it is to go wombling down the park. Just because there's a nice strip of untouched groomed snow beside the XL line doesn't mean nobody is ever going to mess up a spin and go shooting off the side at 50kph, backwards. The park has those buffer areas for a very good reason.
I swear some adults treat it like a family fun zone. I've got some dirty looks from various mums and dads when I went shooting past little Timmy while he pizza'd his way down the side of the in-run for a jump that's 4 times taller than he is.
On a lighter note, I took this excellent photo of the loading platform at the High Noon last year:
its normally done to hit the 1ft rail ramps rozboon because the person on skis/board is too useless and soft to hit even the small kicker line. proud to say ive never achieved any of your gaper examples. I snuck off below the carpark at hutt and learnt the ways there, although alot is just plain common sense
another gaper fave is wedge christies 5 deep across a narrow flat trail stopping anyone getting past
haha..i kooked the double happy chair at whaka last year. Coming down with Oldscool to meet Blunt, my stomp pad had detached somewhere without me knowing. Try to slide off chair, foot down on slick surface..and woah i was down on the snow..felt pretty embarrased![]()
--------------------------------
I finally put a stomp pad on the gnu after a dodgy tbar day, smokins still clean. Theres an art to unloading chairs without the stomp pad backup thats for sure![]()

Agree - it was in Canada. Not my territory - like the skate park when I'm out blading (well sometimes I sneak over the rollers cos I can do them faster than any skateboarder). Anyway, I thought it was a bad idea and stuck to the sides. Everyone else went down the middle. To give the host credit she DID tell the staff at the top and they said go for it. Just the people in the middle didn't know and there was a near miss.

True that. Its a bit of a bottle neck due to the n00bs and the fact you unload and have to veer to the left. My daughter had her first lesson (on skis) at HV and the dumb instructor didn't tell her she needed to walk off to the left of the chair. She had my daughter sitting on the right hand side and she walk off straight and had the chair smack her in the head *ouch* Dad was not pleased I can tell you

Agreed. Modern wetsuits are so damn good. Add a pair of booties and a hood if required and you wont even know the water is only 9 degress with a wind chill of minus 3 LOL.
I still reckon the water in the Wellington / Wairarapa region is as cold as just about anywhere in NZ ... 'cept Dunnos and below. :laugh

Water temp in Wellington would always be cool 9 degrees so wouldn't matter when you started to learn. Lyall Bay has a place I think. Getting on to the board (and staying on :laugh
