Will be an interesting weekend, we are leaving AK tomorrow morning at 5am... come on snow and sun...
At the moment I'm trying to decide if it will be a 2 day weekend or not...
I'm happy with cloudy weather as long as the snow is good ![]()
*edited 05 Aug 2010 10:26
Looking at the current weather systems, Saturday will be a classic high cloud day, but the cloud will gradually becoming heavier and the wind will increase. Sunday will be a wake up and hear " lifts on hold due to high winds and poor visibility but we have had 10cms of new snow overnight on the upper mountain."

Interesting weekend thats for shore we should be leaving AK at 5am. So hopefulley everyone else is organized to go.
How is the snow at turoa today?
Worth a day trip tomorrow?
Is the park completely wrecked from all the rain?
Looks like you made a good call Jude, looking at the webcams. Clear blue skies at Whakapapa, total greyout at Turoa! What a two faced mountain we all love!
Turoa clear the whole time. Just a low light from the high overcast cloud.
King Karl
The park has been run flat and full of bits of rocks and closed.
Down low has been ravaged by the rain (I downloaded the pick today)
The snow was a flat untracked surface in most places but took a bit to get the edges into it. Was good to go from first run.
Now off to work, would of liked to steal the avo, might come out wicked, voltaren will tell you for sure

Snow should still be sweet tomorrow, it was staying cold and partially frozen
--------------------------------
"If in doubt, straighten 'em out"
Bugger. Probability of having the park rebuilt by tomorrow is extremely slim I'm guessing?
I had such a good sleep last night!
I woke up and it's November.
Temperature
Snow depth
Slush
Waterfalls
All November.
Can anyone tell me what happened in August, September & October? I missed it somewhere....

Winter 2010 is yet to arrive. I've still got cluster flies at my house and they're suppose to be all dead by early winter. ![]()

Yeah I have to say....so far this season blows..... the cams show a good bit of snow pack took a hit but I guess Jude and the locals will put us right on that one.
Normally I'd have had at least a run or 2 down bythis time in the year.......pretty crap really!
Ah well...we still have spring to go.....here's hoping for some August snow!

The rain has done damage but not as bad as I thought (although they had to fill in bits and pieces especially the shuss back to the Waterfall Express which was a raging torrent at 6am this morning I heard). What I thought was going to be a 3 run day turned out bluebird till 4pm
Heavy rhiming so didn't go off groomers much (waterskiing vs ice-skating), although the Valley was starting to release towards 3pm. Express and RG were mounds of slush and tossed up if I'd back to lodge. Did, only because there were no people around. Wouldn't have done it on a busy weekend day - would be carnage
Here's a nice shot of the Waterfalls. As Edgehi said - feels like November

THATS A BAD SHOT JUDE, BAD SHOT! Even worse than Tuesday. Hopefully tomorrow turns out and every thing freezes up a bit with the 1800m freezing level tonight.
Mayby they might be able to get the slop groomed nicely, then let it freeze...Good firm groomers, sorts the skiers from the boarders alright

Not it sorts out the advanced from the learners who think they are decent.
As long as it is not blue ice hard pack can be ridden fine on a board.

Nothing like sharp edges and firm groomers in the morning, regardless of what you brought.

Here's a better one of the Valley waterfall.
Had better get my skinny ice skis out for the morning, then swap to the wider slush cutters for the arvo
Good news...it's not raining ![]()

reine de l'hiver
110mm Kingswoods for the Ice and 123mm Bents for the slush is it. Or some 160cm Elan Race carvers, where from, Rented from Edge to Edge of course by the skotel where one good turn deserves another

Are the rocks protruding out on the valley T and the Knoll trails much? Reackon its time to bring back out the rock hoppers?
--------------------------------
"If in doubt, straighten 'em out"
@ Jedski
Surprisingly not. A few on the Waterfall Express - ouch. The one run munter.
Cold and clear out. I hear a snowmaker in the distancce but none going on RG. Suspect they are running on the Express or maybe HV - looked TRAGIC today (as viewed Centennial queue this morning).

I honestly thought skiers would go skinny waist widths for the ice.
Im running a 159 camber for rocks/general carving. Alt (RC) camber for when the decent snow finally gets here and fun (i havent tried it yet...and may end up riding it on the most upper mountain runs and then down loading on the runs that have rocks the way this season is going).

A smart cookie i.e Jude would but obeise is where its at. Download you may. Just what I have done many times this season at Turoa. Gear with value in the thousands isnt worth rock hopping for a run threw the muppets

Well, for all her fashion faux pas with the Ghetto gowns and Thuggies (a long bodied hoodie that extends to the knees), Jude is certainly wise.
I am thinking that downloading is going to be the way to go. I've a weekend at Whaka coming up soon, and a bigger trip to Turoa and am hoping that its top to bottom by the time the trip happens.
The reverse is brand new, and needs to be riden.

Nope absolutly hate that rubbish light saber weilding crap.
Jude, get a 'ghetto gown', chuck her on and you'll be 450ing onto rails with ease. Everyone i've seen wearing one is cranking the park and skiing back to the lift as strait as a stick
Turoa isnt that bad. I've ridden my Bents at Turoa for 7 days now and still in mint condition. I have ripped my Kingswoods 5 days at whaka now and only one light scratch (damn icey drop take-off) that I p-texed to make them mint again. Wise sliding means the other older pairs have taken the shots from rocks.
Wax them everyday with a hard wax and ride wisely and you'll be sweet.
Although this was before Judes waterfalls so who knows now?? ![]()

unless there has been significant rain damage since a week ago turoa is sweet, there were hardly any rocks except right at the bottom of home run. Giant up was loaded.
Thinking of downloading the Waterfall Express. Have to walk or ski the RG to ge back to the lodge. Express and RG the most scary runs on the field at weekends - muppets, rocks
I'm terrified of walking down the RG for food drops during business hours - just waiting to be body slammed by a 150kg learner. Would get me to the bottom quicker.
Like one of our clubbies who let go of a rubbish bag at the top of the RG which then torpeded through the muppets, demolished the slow sign, and was eventually 'rescued' by a gallant border who thought it was a small child or wayward board
@Jedski/Fattrav. Getting the Bernina out now to stich up a ghetto gown. Will double as an emergency shelter when Ken's blizzard comes ![]()

Well, I've just booked accommodation. As long as it's open I'm happy. So far I've been making the right calls ![]()
Hmmm.... Don't mind a bit of cloud, even a bit of a snow shower.... but if the forecasts are right it seems both sides are in for strong to gale force winds, whatd'ya reckon?

Dont know about this weekend. Unless there is some snowmaking tonight the exit to the waterfall express wont be able to open. There is no more snow to push there, it is surrounded in rocks and almost threw to the base on the trail. Acess only, mayby?
Had to download the express and centenial today. From below Knoll Ridge it was super sloppy and rocky, not worth it
Was very firm this morning but west was absolutly sublime. Even some buttery turns to be had on west quad.
Metservice Forecast looking mint. Bad for you fellas but great for Jude and I, Well claim it for you on wednesday, fingers crossed 50cm's is on it's way

Had some good turns with Jedski and some clubbies out west this arvo. Shame they are closing it at 2.45. West was good when it released, slop most other places. Joined Jedski and downloaded the Express.
Calm and drizzly here at the moment. Just got back in and not cold. Hanging out for the big storm that Bob McDavitt and Ken Ring are promising. I will eat mt ghetto gown if we get 50cm in one hit, 2 ghetto gowns for a metre ![]()

any idea on how many rocks on the valley, knoll & waterfall area runs at the moment?

You better state the fine print...One hit, I would take as one storm cycle over a couple of days. You'll be eating that Ghetto Gown fo' shor'! High hopes, o yea!
It seems that when the snow is wet an releases west seems to be the only place skiable. Was a good arvo for sure, good turns alright, just gotta take a punt on then rocks. Also lack of muppets out there cranks my smile
High Traverse coming along nicely so hopefully they will open late when its complete, thats what the lifty told me anyway.

Yeah, kingsize. Will have to make them out of chocolate
I've revised it to barbie-doll sized ghetto gowns.

Knoll - Just a few sharks pointing threw on the humps, 10cm should fix most of em
Valley - Not bad at all
Downloaded today but skis still in pristine condition so go figure

thinking of heading to the mountain for for a couple of days for monday and tuesday, whats the weather doing? too many different reports. >???
Dont like you chances but Ruapehu anything can happen.
Took a run this morning first thing...wish I had not it was rather interesting. Irony being got to the bottom of the Rock Garden to call it quits and the cloud cleared acrossed the ski area. Seeing what could not see before will be giving it a miss until the big storm comes.
Good news. It is SNOWING. Did a couple of miserable runs on crowded, sloppy, runs with poor vis and called it a day. Rubbish run/food drop and suicide walk down RG more appealing.
Was 2 deg at carpark but when I came out of the grocery room about an hour ago the temp had dropped and it was snowing. Struggled back down RG with 20 kg pack and 6 doz eggs (only 2 broke). Still snowing. Let's hope it doesn't turn to rain.

Jude,
Scrambled eggs for lunch then.
If that is the lodge I think it is (walked passed the frigging thing thousands of times seeing that view) then the Rock Garden must be true to its name.
Anyone remember the rock garden poma...???

I bet tomorow youl wake up to fresh pow and it will still be snowing, maybe heavy. Boo-ya!
The ski trips of my youth were before Snow guns. The Rock garden was aptly named, it was never skiable when I was there. First time I rode down it was 2008. We used to ride the chair up and ski the Pinnacle platters.
--------------------------------

Pinnacles platter was the Rock Garden Poma from memory...up the left hand gully from the little ridge above and to the left of the Top of the Bruce passed VIC uni ski club sitting just back from the wee left ridge up that gentle gully towards Pinnacle Ski Club and stopping just short of the bottom of Olaf's Drop (or Jump) depending on how good you though you were.
It was de-installed and the tower foundations removed a long time ago I think.
Are we talking the same tow?
