Ruapehu 2010
Was in Fairlie for the weekend and there was the tiniest amount of snow on about the top 100m of Fox Peak but still way above the field itself, probably gone by now though. Nothing else on any of the other ranges in view.
But yeah its dropping in temp in chch too ![]()

Yes... it is cold.
Bloody -1 at home this morning as I walked to work, slipped on the ice on the footbridge!.
I promised myself I wasnt going to tourture myself with the forum (as $ < Season Pass+etc this year)
but, alas, addictions are not kind things. It started with the frost, which lead to the weather report, which lead to snow-forcast, which lead to snow.co.nz and before I knew it I woke up in the gutter of the never ending story.
...and I bought new boots at the end of last season that I never got to use
Oh course this got me thinking about pimping something out to fund my habit - and I thought who better to ask about this then fellow snow addicts ( i hope you dont mind?)
I was thinking of renting out my empty house in Taumarunui (45min door to snow) from, say 7pm Friday to 6pm Sunday and 7pm Sunday to 6pm Friday. I'd put some bunks, beds and sofa beds, etc but a'la ski club styles not Château. It would 'officially' sleep ~10 if you didnt use sofa bed(s) in the lounge and / or dinning room. Ofcourse I realy dont care how many actually slept in the place as long as I can use it as an excuse to go down in the weekends and ski... mind you, means kipping at the mother in laws
Anyway - I was wondering what you guys thought would be a popular weekend price and a week price?
And, especially the Ak crowd, if you think people are interested in such offerings?
Any help to get me on the snow this winter is realy appreciated
Cheers

Now there's an idea - I could create 80 threads promoting my house!
ps - sorry, I was just wondering what people would pay.
@ kc skier
$20 per head per night? Way back I ran a back-packers in Oz - don't underestimate the amount of cleaning and laundry you'll have to do (unless you stipulate people bring own linen but they'd expect duvets). Plus check council bylaws re 'boarding establishments'. Think you have to have quite robust fire alarm systems in place (ie more than just smoke detectors). Easier to rent for season to workers = steady income, usual landlord tenant relationship. Don't know if workers go as far out as Taurmarunui though?
--------------------------------
reine de l'hiver
Cheers Jude - NO! Certainly dont want to do it as a 'boarding establishment'!
It would be the house, not per head.
Would $250 for the weekend/midweek seem to much for whole house / own linen? (sleeping bags I'd of imagined??)
@gavspad - do you know if some of the staff still commute from Taumarunui in RAL van?
KC I want to see your avfatar landing on top of "that other" avatar.

If it sleeps 10 then $250 weekend not bad ($25 per head). Bit steep for smaller group, esp as they'd have 1 1/2 hr return trip to mtn each day. Maybe $200? Bring own linen/sleeping bags but people will expect duvets and pillows of course. And don't underestimate the cleaning. I've had comdoms (used - eekkkk)left on floor, sugar spread all over kitchen, people so drunk they can't get out of bed to go to the toilet (thank god it was a bottom bunk), vomiting over sides of bunks......and they all expect someone else to clean it up as they are paying to be there. Gosh, this sounds super negative but not meant to put you off but.......

The progress that has occurred over the last 2 weeks is stunning, have a look back at the "last fine day" shot on the 25th of April, since then the entire roof has gone on and been clad, + given that a large chunk of the "walls" of this place are floor to ceiling window units, I would guess they could have this place sealed up by Queens/ B/day-
But it may still take a couple of months for the fitout.
Met's got snow above 2000m tomorrow through Tuesday

Your blog on snowco has me amped for the new season CS. I keep telling my groms that we will wait until there is a decent snow base, we're not going to rush up there the too early in the season etc etc. But now I can see me being up there skating on the ice as soon as RAL opens the fields. Looking forward to chucking my son down Big Bowl LOL

sadly not..i think ive had about 200 days since i got it.

Wow - just counted - had 121 since I got mine in '06
whoops make that 101, I counted in my south island days. They don't count, this time, aye BP

so about 50 days a season then? impressive
go back to maths class BP...maybe your buddy BC can teach you?
2001,2002,2003,2004,2005,2006,2007,2008,2009 = 9 seasons
200 days divided by 9 = 22 days.
but it was a guess, so maybe more like 165 days...which is on average about 18 days a season
--------------------------------
which is still pretty good!
not as high as u CS..the biggest weekend warrior in the north island (quoted NZ Snowboarder may 2010)
--------------------------------
it's not like the si is never shut. out of 5 days possible at cardies we got 2 at the uni snow games last year.
Did go to tc on one of them though, but it is not that common for both sides at ruapehu to be completely closed.
lets see last year I had 18 at ruapehu out of a total possible on my trips of around 22-24.
Ruapehu often has bad weather in June/July but come spring there are heaps of fine weather days. It's not uncommon for 2-3 weeks of fine weather in September.
si is better early season but ruapehu runs much later and has great weather in spring. When was the last time you skied hutt in November?

If it wasnt so common you wouldnt get so defensive every time i bait you
So basically your saying RAL is a good place to go for spring slush? come south for the powder
as for hutt in november? who rides hutt fullstop, bar gaper cass
when did RAL lifts stop spinning last year?
*edited 18 May 2010 22:34
my point is you make stuff up about about the north. come south for powder yeah ok ive found not much but ice at cp. tc is the only place I've found decent powder down there the others southern lakes field are nothing special most of the time. Coronet peak has tones of ice, cardrona sometimes good but to easy remarkable can be ok but flat.
One of my best powder days just happens to be at whakapapa after a week of ice at cp. Last year turoa shut on 8th novemver and the 16th nov in 08.
how can you not like corn? sure it's not powder but ruapehu spring snow is awesome.
sure ruapehu is sometimes shut, but it is not nearly as often as you make it out to be. If you can get up midweek there are heaps of fine days in the season. plus no bad weather = no snow.

actually RAL hardly ever closes these days..theres always 1 or 2 lifts running even on bad days, and i mean chairs not poma.
RAL usually shuts mid november, sometimes up to the 20th..then occasionally will reopen for summer skiing.
First day i ever boarded was dec 26 1992, and was about 1.5 m base still.

but bp doesn't like to ride unless it is a powder blue bird day with no one else around. ![]()

yawn same record as last season impreza. you've been raving ever since i pointed you in TCs direction.drop elevator or hourglass chutes at remarks and tell me how flat they are. I have no idea why you always go on about the southern lakes either, for the 107th time i live in canterbury. From memory BR had about 2 closed days all season
All im saying is you can have your september corn, we will still be skiing pow off the spring NW storms.
you guys get so defensive, yet half the time you moan yourselves about the weather, crowds, stolen boards etc. turn it up mate
1st day ridng last year may 12th hiking 1m fresh. last day october 5th or 7th riding 20-30cm fresh at BR

by the way pow and bluebird days are an oxymoron, the best days are always overcast. i take it you like riding pva glue
Try skiing Japanese blower pow in a storm at 9pm
Blunt - if you're after snow quality, you'll score the best you'll ever get at Ruapehu in June/July. You just have to go hunting for it. That's the time of year when the storms are regular + sufficient + cold enough to actually result in fresh, rideable snow.
BP, Ruapehu's spring slush/corn is pretty damn good. If we're both there at Labour Weekend then I'll drag you out to sample the slack-country.

Cool! I've two groms who are itching to get up the hill again. My son is 12 and should handle the early season no problem. Can ride the blue runs sweet as so I got him a season pass. My duaghter is only 8 and yet to advance off the nursary slopes. She's a skier anyway
But yep ... fricken amping for i
