How far down can you ride the Glacier? I was planning a run down there but was a bit concerned about the trek out.

Where were you when this released? On the ski field or did you use the quad to push past the boundaries?

Ski patrol are generally pretty interested to hear about this stuff! There has been a considerable avalanche warning level for the last couple of days.

Awesome shot.. I had runs like this on Thursday & Saturday last week, but didn't take the camera with me

Good to see a nice base finally coming through. Not bad considering the rain early in the month was said it could've been 'Season Ending' by some

Yeah avalanche.net.nz mentioned multiple releases within the ski areas from natural activity, explosives and ski cutting (essentially what jedski did )

Reasonably dry, wind affected snowfall on top of concrete = takes a little while to bond, I guess.

I was quite suprised to see the number of natural releases up. I was more interested to see if the release had happened in an area where control work had already been done.

Learn to read weather maps and make the call yourself In the end it's always a bit of a gamble with mountain weather.. and what is forecast can often change within hours.

It was inside the boundry not far from a groomer. Avi work had just been completed but this big bit of the face covered in wind deposited pow had no sign of being bombed/ski cut. I notified a patroller fixing ropes and he went off to check it but I had already tried to get the rest to slide along the crack that formed in front of me but it didnt release like the rest.
Avi warning sitting at moderate today but most of the windblown has solidified a bit today. Getting colder, hope edgehis northern snow storm theory is correct...shame about these 120km/h gusts forecasted

yeah it was touch and go with those warm rain storms from the north but we are getting there now, one more good storm should see the mtn nicely set up..good news is that we have had cold dry snow every fall so it still feels like winter...amazing windblown conditions today at turoa , the wind was blowing down the field and filling up all the trails...until it got ridiculous and they closed the express

Traditionally the biggest dumps come off a NWer,

Things seem to be looking fairly good for a decent fall on both Sat/Sun - certainly for the upper mountain.

WELL WELL WELL

FUUUUUUUK me, what a day. Started off with having to go to work but once I finished that up I check the reports and for some unknown reason I belive RAL that Turoa has long fine spells and the winds easing. So off I go.

It starts off getting caught at road works and behind cars that won't pass a truck moving slow. So when the huge strait before Horopito comes around I took the lot but sure enough tucked completely out of view behind bushes theres a camera. There goes my new boots on a ratjher heafty fine coming my way Once I finally get to Turoa it is absolute rubbish and absolutly rain hammered but I grunt it out. Then out of now where It clears...for 3 runs anyway in sloppy wet pow/driftage/groomers but then it packed it in again so I left at 3pm. Waist of time and this one day, is going to cost me the price of 2 friggen season passes. Absolutly pissed, this is what the darkside does to ya'

I like the look of the http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Turoa/6day/mid [snow-forecast.com] forecast. Do you reckon we could have this one this weekend please? First trip since the first week of the school hols (when it was quiet but closed, not the week when it was bluebird and rammed). And also the first time I've been away on a boys trip since my daughter was born 18 months ago. Think I deserve some decent weather. Please?

^^ 104 under the 110 'tolerance' so you should be fine. I only got an $80 fine for doing 13km over the speed limit (Ngauranga Gorge where it is impossible to go 80 without sitting on the brake the whole way).
Clear here at the moment. Not raining. See the freezing level is going way up

didnt u say its gonna cost u the price of 2 season passes? so that like $800 or so...not exactly what u get for doing just over the speed limit..more than 180 in an 100 zone.

$630 seriously you must have had a extra grumpy cop. A speedo could easily be out by 4km/h. Or was it 104 in the roadworks then that would make sense.

I thought they had lowered the fines and upped the demerit points.

^^ Needs to be 80 when dry but the thing is muppets see that and don't drive to the conditions when it is slick. Doesn't it go to 60 and 70 or something at the top??? Why not 50 at the top like whaka, especially with the serious grit build ups sometimes.

INTERESTING FACT
Reading the police website today I discovered that you can't get a ticket within the last 250 meters of a passing lane. Handy on short passing lanes when it takes the whole thing going at 110k to pass even the slowest car.

Anyways, watch that Silver van hidden in the bushes just before Horipito (Natty Park side) you Turoa lot.

I got lucky and it was a speed camera so no cop and no demerit points either. If you are going over 140k's it seems you go strait to the $630 fine and if you get busted by a cop, instant 28 day licence suspension and over 150k means dangerous driving charges aswell.
