If you know where to go there is some awesome terrain but you have to go right after the storm or late in the day or it is ice.
If you like big gullies and natural half pipes and cliffs ruapehu is loaded with them. I'm sure canty has stuff as good but ruapehu has better terrain than the southern lakes.

yeah I love those, they were so much fun I went way way to far out a couple of season back and ended up having a 40 min walk back. One thing that makes ruapehu awesome on a good day is the endless back country and a huge amount of it is lift accessed.

Have been seduced by the gullies below the national chair a few times. Luckily was able to cut back in at the bottom of the loop road when we realised the snow was going to run out. Involved heck of a climb over a ridge on a hot spring day though. When there has been snow have skiied those gullies to the Whakapapaiti carpark (a mate picked us up and we did it 3 more times that day . We did check a map - lots of cliff bands to get stuck on.

Usually the kind of people that do things like carve down the park, jump the little up-ramps for rails (teehee so guilty of this... I fail @ rails), ski in jeans, tuck pants into boots, don't wear gloves, snowblade, don't do up the booster strap on their boots, comment loudly about the high quality of this powder while skiing a wind-stripped groomer, ski off the end of the loading platform on the High Noon Express, fall over getting off the express then sit there laughing, tuck while pizzaing, lose snowboards that then hoot off down the hill, or ask me if my skis are trick skis for doing tricks on.

These are all examples from roughly 2 hours skiing at Turoa

Confessional time is it people? Haha...
Add to the list if you like.

Hmm what else is there, stereotypical gaper-tastic things... (all things I've seen at Turoa... gaper central? Happy Valley and Alpine Meadow are exempt, noobs will be noobs.)

-Knocking over every. single. pair. of skis/boards on a rack
-Taking out an instructor (heh, my friend did that back when we were gaper-tacular)
-Furiously trying to stomp your foot back into a binding with the heel-piece raised, and then succeeding
-Waddling across the paving stones at the base area, with skis on
-Wearing a bum-bag/fanny-pack
-Losing a pole because you're not using your pole straps (exemptions for if you're doing something insane)
-Dropping a pole from the lift
-Losing a SKI from the lift
-Falling over when you turn around to see why the patroller is shouting at you (because you're skiing through the park)
-Crashing into a banana boat (aka sled) - bonus points if it has someone injured in it
-Lining up for the Express with 8 people
-Getting cleaned out by the barrier arms on the Giant (guilty as charged, your honor)
-Trying to ski over a queue rope, catching it instead which then tips over the rubbish bin it's tied to
-Getting hit in the head by the Movenpick because you bent over to do up your binding, right in front of the chair.
-Colliding with a trail-safety guy
-Crashing into a SLOW sign, because you were going to fast. (Bonus irony points)
-Wearing non-waterproof outwear
-Skiing without ANY eyewear
-Breaking your wrist the first time you go snowboarding, because you were too cool for wrist-guards
-Getting banana-boated for a hideously insignificant injury

I'm sure there's heaps more...

EDIT:
Gaper... I choose you!

This year I plan to practise more so I can complete the rest of this list.

(Being a gaper is a good thing right?)

Well I have been rather absent of late but hey there was no snow!

So not too much has changed, BP is still one eyed and thinks all the New Zealand snow falls on the south island fields.

People still need accomodation in Ohakune and we all want the mountains to be open right now.

I'm having a thought and it could be dangerous if it works out!

I take Metservice Tongariro, Metservice Rural Taihape or Waiouru (I guess they're less likely to lie to farmers? Haha...), throw in a handful of mtruapehu.com, MetVUW, snow.co.nz and even a dash of snow-forecast.com. Average it all out, weighting the opinion of each forecaster by their perceived historical accuracy... then ignore it all and go anyway

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one too scared to ski Ruapehu in poor visibility.

I'll save that sort of stuff for fields like Ohau where you are in a valley with nothing to fall off!

Heh... how many times have I heard the line "now where the **** was that cornice?!?" or words to that effect.

The thing I really pay attention to is the wind. That's what closes lifts. These days they generally open unless the vis is truly horrific.
