Ruapehu 2010
Turns are too easy, I'm too skilled for them

"If in doubt, straighten 'em out"
sometimes i wish i was a local
anyway will be down next week definitely..maybe even friday if all goes to plan
--------------------------------
Surprised to wake up to bluebird, freshies and no crowds
Valley, Knoll, Far West all good (except for when the T spat the dummy - bad electrical burn out smell). Snowing now. Tues looking good if wind stays down.
Oh and no guests, on the final countdown - finish next weekend. Might hang around if looking good but really ought to get job to fund Japan.

Man you were right about today Freshie. Came out a stunner. NO ONE THERE. Ski strait onto the lift all day. The downer was Far West is poked, running on diesel for the rest of the season, the express breaking down on me as well as the valley...Fuken Twice. The gear needs some serious maintenance or improvements.
Still freshies to be had but a hell of a lot of sheet ice. More snow tonight. Stake your claim to this epic mid week en-route
So maybe I should stick to the dark side and save me some petrol, is the west chair still going or have they shut it? Whaka really needs an upper mountain lift upgrade. 22 years since the last new lift is a very long time. (happy valley doesn't count)
I bet running on diesel will cost them a fair amount more.
Quad still going. Diesel makes Far West run like a snail compared to full speed power.
That said east side was at it's finest today

"If in doubt, straighten 'em out"
I'll stick to Whaka - even if the Far West T is out there's much more lift-accessed skiable terrain. 10cm of snow here overnight, blowing severe gale at the moment - snow coming in through the cracks in the back door and bathroom windows.![]()

Well, Sunday was AWESOME. I decided to risk it anyway, worst case would be I'd have to go back home if it was closed for the day.
Probably the best day I've had so far. Decent snow despite some icy patches in the morning, no crowds, blue skies. What else could one ask for? ![]()
Certantly windy today. Serious gales raging and the ground white this morning. Must be a horror for Jude. Go back to bed and hide is probaby the best thing to do
--------------------------------
"If in doubt, straighten 'em out"
Just cleaned two ovens and doing mounds of washing. The drying room is the warmest place, apart from under the duvet. Too cold in pantry to do stocktake. Will warm up for a bit, then start packing up my stuff. Certainly the windiest it's been - the place is shaking big time, might be a quick one way trip to Turangi if it gets worse.
Clearing now, snow blowing around big time. South facing ridges stripped.

But will tower 7 stand for it?

Sunday was definitely awesome at Turoa, close to the best day of the season. Skied straight onto the Express all day (once they got it open). Some ice around but some awesome pockets of powder if you were willing to do a bit of walking out.
MOAR SNOW

Gaper.
The Gut in Whakapapa was bliss, lots of wind blown powder to be had
Still blowing
and snowing ![]()

Same old in the park aswell. Turned white twice already and another front rolled through bringing massive dry flakes...imagine the wind drifts up top. Drool...
--------------------------------
"If in doubt, straighten 'em out"
But will the weather let us claim them this time? severe south east gales tomorrow then frezzing level going to 2400m ![]()
20cm on Turoa
Where did that come from!
Hopefully the forecast rain doesn't do too much damage.. seems to be the cycle this season. Good snow fall, then freezing level rising too early and all getting washed off by the rain.

IT Hack & Genuine NutJob
Still blowing a gale. Have to go outside today. If Lorenz's open I might ski down for a coffee and skin back up. Not looking good for rest of week. Wind ![]()

The snow stake at Turoa reads accurately at 219cm's as of 9am this morning. There have been heavy snow showers over the ski area for the last 36 hours, producing significant drifting in places and filling in the gullies.

Have you seen tomorrow's forecast?
Wind at 1500 metres: Easterly gale 80 km/h.
Wind at 3000 metres: Easterly gale 80 km/h.
Not much chance of either side being open
Agree - planning trip to Taupo.

We finally just got a lull in this wind. Things are hardly moving at Natty Park. You could hardly get outside before.
--------------------------------
"If in doubt, straighten 'em out"
Skiied down to Lorenz's and skinned back up. Warmer out than I thought. Snow melting/being blown away. Skiing back up was interesting. Thought about going to Hut Flat for a look but too windy - hooting it - from the east now I think. Roof making a different set of alarming sounds (along with the occassional crash of ice coming off Skippers/Olafs).

@ Jedski

Webcams looking good.
Mountain nice and clear buuuuuuuuuuuuuuutttt... It is just one big ice skating rink glistening. Seriously slick

"If in doubt, straighten 'em out"
pity the weekend is looking mythical again..well saturday a maybe..sunday looks dire (morning ok?). Maybe time to take monday off?
--------------------------------
wow here we go again, turoa looks fully covered in snow, cant see no shiny bits...but with forecast winds and rain with a 3000m freezing level..here we go again..

Jedski is right, it's icy up here. All the snow has blown away, the wind and the ice shards coming down the mountain onto my roof making hellava racket. Make it stop.
Easterly = beastly.

Well it was a calm stunning arvo down her jude. Nice and peaceful
Good to know the darkside isn't scraped and polished
--------------------------------
"If in doubt, straighten 'em out"
4000m freezing level on Sat. Crikey! By the looks of things...We'll be lucky if we even get another clear day up Whaka before the 26th skiing without huge rivers

"If in doubt, straighten 'em out"
I think I will go to the darkside on Saturday. I've only been there early season when Whakas hadn't opened yet.
Saturday is looking ok at this stage. Might come thru for the day with the groms.

im down this weekend..will have to meet up blunt if u make up this way

Went to Taupo today. Very nice. Didn't need a facial as I got a free exfoliation from the blowing 'snow' coming up the RG. Never seen anything like it (except for that weather bomb in 08). Grit all over the snow, melting fast. Stuff that was there this morning is now gone. Would go to darkside on Sat but have to stay this side for RMCA meeting. Have to say, I'm over this non-season.

^^^u dont know how lucky u are..youve had about 50+ days in![]()
--------------------------------
and missed 50+ from gay weather. 2010 has been one of the worst main seasons i can remember. since end of july every dump has had wind and rain destroying it within 72hours. Bring on north america and some consistency![]()
yeah you have really had to been there in the whiteout this year to get the freshies when it clears before the wet stuff turned up. All the snow has come to late. Rocks in mid August just tells the story. Started good, rained away, snowed again rained away over and over so the base never really build up very well.
As usual many fields have shut with more snow than they had for most of the season, half of the problem in nz is everywhere shuts to early. People need to realize there is some great snow to be had well into october. Everyone is super keen in late may, but come late october when the snow cover is way better only the keen ones are left.
I bet they could run the highnoon till late November most years, but everyone has given up by then.

wow..ive never had more than 20 days in a season..this year has been my worst sice 98..if i end up with 10 that will be a good effort.
--------------------------------
^^ I wonder how many days we have actually had Jude excluding 3 runs on the RG in the rain days. I can't imagine it stacks very well to last season...
Atleast a break in the wind 2mo arvo

20 days isn't that hard to get if your keen. I should get another 10 days by the end of the season if the weather plays it's part. 10 out of around 17 possible shouldn't be to much to ask.
if I only do weekends I can average about 25 by end of Sep easy
10 out of 17? That isn't a very good success rate is it. I remember getting 30 out about 33 a few years back as a warrior.
Those 10 days...gee I am still waiting fo those. 4th day of rubbish ticked off as season end dwindles

Last year I managed ~ 30-40 days. This year I'll be lucky to crack 15 I think.
So many rubbish weekends and not enough time for sly mid-weekers ![]()

If ever there was a season to be out injured, this was definately it.....
Roll on 2011.![]()

Wait For The Ricochet
With Canada earlier tnis year and Japan later I hope to crack 100. But can count the number of good days at Whaka as under 20. Better than the office though. Trying to get fare to Japan but all hidiously expensive through mainstream agents and Jet Star doesn't go to Sapporo (and has hideous limits on luggage). Any suggestions? Went Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong last time but that route is now $1000 more expensive, clocking in at $2600. Yikes!!!

@Jude, my fare return to Sapporo is $1600 from Auckland.. flying JAL went through an agent though
or maybe virgin australia to osaka, then a domestic to sapporo?
or one of the pacific airlines..air pacific, air calin i think?
cheapest ive seen is JAL (codeshare with air nz)
www.skyscanner.net might be worth a look
--------------------------------
@Jude Don't forget all the good sunny days that you missed when you were off having an off mountain break. I recall a good handfull

www.jetabroad.com.au
has fare for $1400 including tax..not sure of your dates though.
seems to be JAL or JAL/ANA combos

there for the weekend, promise not to bail on you this time Blunt!
I think Labour Weekend will be my next trip.
This weekend looks... umm... mixed?
Still, I think I've cracked 30 days at Ruapehu this year, not bad for someone in Welly and I'd say there were only a couple in there that I didn't rate as good days. Got pretty lucky on some big gambles. Gives me a grand total of 50-odd for the year, averaging out to skiing 1 day a week for a whole year! Sweet
Tomorrow might be Ok. Sun out and wind dropped. Sunday looking poo. See snow for Mon? Maybe I'll hang around?

I've also clocked about 30 days, weekends only. New job no holidays. Saturday looking good for the darkside, Leaving at 5:00am
Well I've manged 24 so far and only around 4 crap days, i would have though you'd get a whole lot more living on the mountain.
