I like it when I can't see the gapers so I have plenty of excuses to knock the s*h*i*t out of them when they get in my way. But it does make for some great fun when you know the gully is there somewhere and you are in the lead so you unstrap walk to where you think it is, call back to the group then disappear as the overhang (u did not know you were standing on) crumbles and they all crack up while you tumble down backwards hoping you dont hit any rocks.

Nah, it wasn't that exciting. Just me alone in the fog wandering on and off the trail. Head torch useless. Light just bounced off the fog, as it does. And being summer, pitch black - no snow, no blazing hut/cat lights.

Good learning experiences.

Mmmmmmm...ice skating on the Alpine Meadow. Think of me stuck up there from end of June with no decent skiing for a month. Better than a desk though
Maybe I'll learn to snowboard

So, just jumped on Ruapehu site, checked the camera's and it sure looks like winter up there, with forecast snow on all forecasts I've seen for the rest of the week at least. So 'Snow in may, melts away' we only have a week left in May, so maybe this year will be another exeption to the rule. Anyhow, very much looking forward to the season.
What's all your thoughts??

True. If the wind doesn't blow it away. Skiied early July at Turoa last year. Some beaut ice just as you come into the 6-pack. People going like skittles (inlcuding instructors and me - gaper moment). Yet over Slider/Solitude was a big stash of pow The random beauty of Rua.

We set off a minor avalanche up above the thumb in early July (may have even been very late June??) last year.
Wind loading = fun Takes what little snow they get and deposits it all in a strip juuuust wide enough for some sweet turns. At Ruapehu the wind strength and direction from the day before is almost as important as the current conditions.

I think that's when I saw you because that was my last time I as there before I broke my ankle.
Next time was last 3 weekends of season. Anyway, the ice skate was worth the windblown - dry and light. Gotta take what you can get at Rua

I set off a decent slide at squaw on a 6inch day, once again wind loaded cornices

i think we forget how early it is..the season proper (at turoa) never really started until the t bars had enough cover..about mid july....now the lower field trails ..alpine meadow etc .. is manmade so the start date of the season has got earlier.. we need three more good storm events incl the snow in kune event hopefully before the mountain can be ridden all over...but blunt its looking good

I imagine it'll begin mid-field (Express at Turoa, Waterfall at Whakas) as soon as the wet bulb temp gets low enough. Probably in the next few days, unless there's some major high temps due. Even if they're just laying down slabs of ice at least it helps fill the gaps between rocks.

You are correct........this is a 'Special forces' 'Black bag Ops.' Squirrel.....used for recon and covert ops. by US and British forces.....the SAS use them also ...mainly to distract and confuse the enemy.

I believe they come with a fetching winter Camo also....... .

Kinda off topic...but as I wil be on the mountain all season I was thinking of getting snow tyres for the car. Worth the investment? Saw all sorts of cars that clearly weren't 4wd zipping around on them in snow/ice in Canada/Japan. My car 2wd volvo estate (gaper alert - sigh). Got me though snow without chains a few times when I have been caught out (ie couldn't be bothered putting them on for 200m of road).
