Yesterday I was forced to share a bluebird powder day at Cragieburn with about 20 other people. Life is pain.

Hamilton and Middle Basin are both in top condition, but the ridges and the area above the guts is pretty wind-scoured.

Saturday: Mt Olympus. Nice snow, not epic but well above average, moderate to strong breeze but too many people I reckon. There were a few jumping the queue and behaving a bit twattishly which kind of sucks at a clubbie because you go there to avoid those kinds of people. Nevertheless it was a good day.

Sunday Roundhill, got there late, snow was sticky. Not sure why they close at the beginning of the school holidays and the day before south canterbury anniversary day when they have heaps of snow still??

This why the nz ski season is so short, places shut up once the punters have given up in favor of the beach. Most season there are a number of places that could run till end of october pretty much any season and some can do early nov, but they people stop coming so they shut.

When was the last time cardies shut due to lack of snow? Just about every year they shut with a huge base. Same story at the remarks and the saddle at tc.

Sad how we have been waiting all season for a good dump the once it comes the fields start to shut up shop.

Had the dump come in the middle of June everywhere would be trying to get open as fast as they can same story if it had come in August.

One reason why they do have to adhere to fixed closing dates is also due to staff employment contracts expiring although I see Coronet has just extended their season by a week. Another issue is that there are a lot of days being lost at the moment due to high winds eg Mt Hutt about 4 out of 7 days being either fully or partially closed. Club fields do have the flexability to run with volunteers when the big commercial fields close but only at weekends usually.

I remember the last day of 07 at Cardies. We had 20cm+ the day before and some more during the week, we had to dig out a table at the Captains cafe.

Then there are other seasons where you are water skiing as you get close to the bottom of the chairlift. Still plenty up top but getting pretty dicey lower down.

Had a sweet day at Porters today, was firm as fuk for the 1st hour before things started to release a bit from then on, by lunch it was spring corn all over the place.
They have lost a heap of snow in 2 weeks since I was there last but surprising that T1 is holding it together pretty well for the time of year.

The crew from airbag.co.nz was set up there today so after lunch went and threw myself onto that for a couple of hours and had a hell of a lot of fun doing crazy sh1t I wouldn't even think about normally

Had another primo day up at BR today for the BWM funday, the crew up there had built a big kicker and big gap-kicker and BWM were giving away spot prizes.
Snow softened nicely by 12 and we sessioned the kicker from 1-2:30 or so
Then on my last run back to the lodge for a beer decided to give the gap-kicker a go, and didn't quite make the gap and slammed the sh1t out of myself, had a few beers to dull the pain and not long back from the doc saying I strained my ac joint, few days in a sling and hopefully all good after that

Mint weekend at Temple Basin - blue skies, warm weather, and a light dusting of fresh snow from Friday slowly turning to spring corn. Apparently Temple had 300mL of rain over the last week since that storm gave them at least a metre + of snow. The rain washed a lot of the fresh snow away and the wind-swept ridges are pretty rocky, but there's still plenty of deep drifts as well, especially in Bill's.

A few of us climbed Mini-Phipps today, which came on in the late afternoon due to its southerly aspect. It's been the #1 mountain on my hit list for the last year or two, and I'm stoked to knock the bastard off.

went up to craigieburn yesterday. it could only be described as perfect. there were quite a few people there but they never seemed to leave the lunch hut. slopes were empty and snow was top grade spring corn. even due south aspect softened up by the close of business. still skiable down to big bend and the bottom of the access tow. get up there while you still have the chance people!

Last Sat - Remarks. Hard and fast first thing but some pockets of very dry winter snow in wee areas particularly around the stash exit which was nice! Pretty much empty up there so we spent the day lapping the big park and the stash. Had a couple of fun runs hitting the house in the stash until it finally axed me, I skidded on the roof, fell on to the edge of it and off the drop to the run out. Escaped with a pretty farking sore ass but it could have been worse.

Cardy on Sunday started with a downer in that they no longer give chill discounts. boo to that. Still, it was their last day of the season and it was a cracker of a day. Went all over the place and had a bunch of fun park runs. Some heavy hitters were on the big jump line and doing some insane stuff - but one poor guy came undone. He hit the biggest jump and did a double backflip - but kept going and was looking like heading for 3. Halfway through he stacked it badly on the landing and that was that. His mates were awesome support, laughing at him as he got up walked a few steps and then collapsed again! Hope the guy is alright - but he was up and mobile when we left. Late in the day, the girls put on their own show - the chicks on staff boarded down from whitestar topless. Top marks!
