That stuff is a way bigger deal in the states due to their liability and insurance issues.

Sounds like you scored porters, nice. Had a bloody good day at remarks on Saturday. Homeward needs more snow, but a month of dry will do that to such a sun exposed face. Shadow basin was bloody good fun though, and still barely tracked, some nice little lines through there and good options for drops. It cracks me up the number of people that ride shadow and just cruise down the cat track to get out of there again...

Did elevator a couple of times, real nice. Top third packed but still soft, the lower 2/3s where it opens up were super nice, pow turns all the way down to the lake. Good fun cruising back out to from the lake there too. Got a nice line through the Alta chutes too, and had a good run out east face as well.

Park is looking rad.

Looks like this first season is showing the problems with the terrain of the new valley view quad at cardies, don't think it's open a single day yet? They'll be hanging out for that snow making...

Can't do much about 4 weeks of blocking highs, has hardly been sh1t though and getting better now.

Anyone heard about the new thing going on at Alpine heli? $225 for access, first run and lunch, $60 per run after that, do as much as you want. More or less unguided. Saw the chopper at the staging point on the devils staircase when heading up on Sat morning, a lot of people giving it a go, looks like a good way to do it.

i'd be keen but the chance of scoring a bunch of aussie muppets who want to ride flat bowls is very high. interesting you mention usa's liablilty there ST, they dont care about people not usung safety bars on chairs and the back of the ski pass voids them of any injuries or mishaps even if they are the mountains fault. by attaching your ski pass you agree. apparently NZ fileds cant do this so who has more liability?

Mainly locals been using it so far apparently, runs pretty much like heli park from the sounds.

Not so sure about the whole safety bar thing, but I guess it's mitigated by the fact that they provide it and you choose not to use it.

We have the same thing here, the alpine/snow responsibility code forms part of the contract you enter into when you purchase a lift ticket, that's why patrol can yell at you - but yes, some courtesy patrollers are douches. The states has the worse liability issues, as they are solely reliant on private insurance providers, who don't want to lose money. We have ACC, which is sweet.

Ha, Bob McDavitt doesn't predict anything... while it's pretty normal to see strong blocking highs in June/July, that last one was something of an anomaly.

I think the reason for not many people using the shadow slopes is the uphill climb out at the botton which I was caught out with the first time I went to The Remarks.

sigh i knew this would happen. this from the back of a squaw valley RFID card:
the user of this ticket understands and expressly agrees
-to assume all risks of injury or death associated with winter sports and use of squaw valleys premises
-to make no claim against the ski area, its owners agents or employees for injury or death arising from use of premises regardless of cause including the alleged negligence of squaw valley
-this is a binding contract and the user agrees that` any use of this ticket or premises confirms the users agreement to be bound by all terms of this ticket

certainly alot more strongly worded than your average nz ticket and the removal of negligence on there behalf doesnt get a mention on nz passes

still dont what your talking about? the main face of shadow has 2-3 long flat areas that you can clear on a board if you hold your speed, so no doubt an expert on skis could also? sugarbowl at remarks also has some long flats

Thanks, it was no 4 that I was looking at when I made the comment about a "track".

Now I've seen the lake alta comment I realise that you are talking about remarkables (doh!).

I've only been there a couple of times and absolutely hated it. That was because I was a beginner and their beginner facilities used to suck.

Looks like I'll have to visit again and check out the rest of the field.

Nothing is a "gentle 15 min hike" in ski boots, I'll have to get my boarding skills sorted and go back on my new "smokin" board

We've been there a couple of times but the wife refuses to go back! Both times it was blowing like mad and getting ice blasted on the T was not fun.

I've got some AC50s at sierra snowboard in my wish list, they should handle it fine

Never had a problem with ice on T lines, I don't know if I've ever come across it or if it's just not such an issue on skis.

yeah im sure you notice it more on a board when the t track becomes rutted ice from skiers doing turns going up the t line. rough for kids though, if they fall they'l end up back at the bottom. Still ride it but its never good times

Actually at the moment it's not looking flash... could be a real snow-pack killer even for the whole South Island, especially for Temple and the Northern Craigies, a whole lotta moisture, and the 540 line is a bit too far south. BUT, it's a few days out yet, and I think the high over OZ could strengthen a bit yet which would push the low BWM is talking about slightly further south and east and extend its southerly fetch. If that doesn't happen then I seriously hope the moisture downgrades. If it comes of as snow the way it is currently progged then the Southern Lakes and Mackenzie will get absolutely puked on.

Anyone who can hit the southern lakes fields this Wednesday should...

Sat 24th - Clarke Glacier with southern lakes heli. Heli is something we have always wanted to do and have looked into it the last couple of seasons but never really committed fully to it. This year, we did some homework and with the W snowfall and good weather this weekend decided to go for it. S Lakes is the only operator to do Clarke glacier and they only do 3-4 trips a year on it so when they told us they were trying to organize it, we got pretty amped up. On first view of the glacier, it doesn't look that big - until you land on the thing. The area is stupendously big - vast. You know when you see a heli movie section and the chopper drops them off on a ridge and they all hunker down beside it before it flies off leaving them in calm powder filled solitude? Thats exactly how it is! and it never got old.
The snow was absolutely gorgeous boot to knee deep super dry fluff - some of the best i've ever seen. Terrain was varied from open bowls at the start through to narrow gullies and a huge amount of natural features. We had a bit of flat light on about 1/3 of one run but otherwise it was really good light. A few slides later in the day as it warmed up - 1 reasonable slab and some loose snow avalanches. I came wayy too close to a crevasse at one stage which was rathering sobering but other than that it was pure fun. There was no hint of edges hittin anything the higher up you were - it was just pure floaty powder - as they guide said, more like surfing than skating.
We did 6 runs which was plenty of fun as they were averaging 800-900m vert each so were pretty damn long. All in all a solid day out and something i'm really glad to have done.

Sun 25th - Remarks
Qtn was in cloud but Remarks was sitting nicely above it which noone in Qtn seemed to realise for the first half of the day - it was reasonably quiet until about lunch. Bluebird day and no wind so perfect park conditions as there wasn't much i was interested in hiking. Coverage was sparse enough, particularly in Shadow but there were some good lines here and there. We spent the day between the big park and the Stash and as always take my hat off to the remarks park team for a great setup. The stash is exactly the same as last year (which is no surprise as you are not gonna be moving that stuff around) but the lack of snow makes the features higher off the ground and consequently more dangerous. The house was closed though which was a real bummer as I smashed myself before i got to do it last year and was really looking forward to it Sun. The adv park had some really good riders gunning it which was great to see - especially this wee Japanese chick boosting effortless hits. Theres a wicked jump over a barrel lower in the park and they have some cool wall ride features too.

Mon 26th - Roundhill. It seems the word is out my friends.......Roundhill had 30-40cm of fresh Fri and the main face was tracked out fully when we got there. Until you see the size of that face for yourself, you wouldn't be surprised to hear that, but it really is enormous. the gully in bowl 2 had some beautiful snow deep in it and was reasonably shaded and in good condition. Did one run through the park but spent the majority of the time in the same area we hit on opening weekend and were still getting fresh lines late in the day. Had a chat to ski patrol about going out wide as the avo danger was considerable in the backcountry. We were in safe terrain but from the top of the rope tow we counted 12 slides in the back bowls and 3 more on the front face. Patrol said that when that snow came in, the conditions were absolutely epic. As much as know Roundhill is now getting notoriety and will be getting more crowded in good snow conditions, i am really glad they are getting the business as they are putting in a great effort year after year.

Remarks is well worth hiking at the moment man, snow is better than it looks once you're in it.

Yeah the snow was good and there were some good lines to be had. But cover is sparse for Remarks. I've been a bit spoiled of late with good dumps of snow though

We were looking at Gallipoli but considering the previous day, decided to have a fun park day. Looks good this week for some fresh.

Theres a wicked jump over a barrel lower in the park and they have some cool wall ride features too.

hmmmmm the clarke glacier.....good memories 06
