Skia ora %%First Name%%,

What a week it's been! Rain devastated the snowpack across the country. Like for many we had a huge early season so on-piste is still viable in most areas. The conditions have kept the ski and board area staff busy doing everything from the usual to shovelling snow onto t-bar and rope lines and rebuilding washed out access roads. I have been reporting for 17 years and I cannot remember there being such a swing in conditions, from the big freeze to the big rain in a single day.

Manganui, Hanmer Springs, Temple Basin, Fox Peak and Dobson are all closed until they get more snow. We haven't heard from Tukino. Olympus is waiting for its snowpack to consolidate; Craigieburn is up on the mountain again today, further evaluating conditions. Towlines will continue to be shovelled and they are trying for a possible opening tomorrow or this weekend. Warm temperatures up the hills are not helping. Rainbow has had a massive slip across their road and has been working all week rebuilding the section. They are still evaluating if the t-bar will open this weekend. One thing is for sure staff are working long hours to dig out washouts, move snow around and everything else possible to get areas open.

Mt Ruapehu staff have been working as hard as anyone to rebuild the runs. At Whakapapa, the Valley T-Bar, Knoll Ridge T-Bar & Waterfall Express are all be back operational (albeit with slightly narrow trails). The Waterfall T-Bar, and West, will remain closed for further assessment and rebuilding of runs due to rain damage. At Turoa, the Wintergarden Platter and Nga Wai Heke chair are closed due to rain damage on trails. The Mother Terrain Park is open but the Nitro Elan Jib Nationals have been postponed until August 11th. The snow is melt freeze which means that it freezes overnight and then thaws in the morning. Keep an eye on the temperatures on the morning report, if they are below zero, there's no rush, have another coffee and head up later for the spring corn snow.

Coronet Peak's night skiing if also cancelled this weekend due to the warm conditions. All other ski and board areas have opened most of their on-piste terrain but there is next to no off-piste snow below 2000m at the moment. The forecast is for continued fine settled conditions until Sunday in the north. Find out at Bens Weather Prediction why Ben is getting excited about the end of this month. Also check out the Snowco forecast provided by snow-forecast.com for a good overview.

CALL TO VOTE: You choose. Tell us who shone and who stunk. Since 2000 online Snowco has published an independent survey, which asks the public to judge, based upon their experience the level of service that they have received during their visit to a ski or board area. The survey consists of 33 questions relating to the service received from the snow user across 9 departments that make up the front line of a ski and board operation. There are two awards, the NZ Ski Area Service Award for commercial ski areas and, the NZ Small Ski Area Service Award for club operated ski fields.
Snowco reviewed a digital book recently and if you're after some light reading check out The Truth about Skiing and Snowboarding. This 292 page book doesn't tell you how to ski or snowboard but it has absolutely everything else you can imagine about the sport from road rules, nutrition, injury prevention, surviving an avalanche and much much more.

Get into it, take care and have a blast.
