Skia ora %%First Name%%,

Broken River - "Ladies and Gentlemen! May we present to you one of the biggest snow days of the season - the October snow is here. Since the early hours of Monday morning, we've received almost 70cm (68cm to be exact) of 'kiwi' powder and after coming straight down (no, NOT sideways) and landing perfectly on and around our two resplendent basins, has settled to a manageable depth. Take a walk up the Stairway to Heaven and behold our tussock-less eden, our alpine paradise. A thin, protective wind crust has formed on the snow's surface - embrace it, then watch as it disappears with the sun's first loving caress. Click into your sticks and strap on your planks because today you will fulfill your destiny. Enjoy!"

Today is looking fantastic with 30cms of snow at Hutt as well. Ruapehu is currently cloudy but this is due to clear, the snow is variable melt freeze with icy patches so might be better on-piste until it softens later in the day. Make the most of it because it is not looking good for the weekend with heavy rain, air traffic delay, road and stock warnings. Ruapehu is in for a good ol' fashion blizzard with heavy rain on Saturday and snow on Sunday. Further south, BR and Hutt will be open this weekend... but probably not Saturday. The unsettled weather will arrive on tomorrow, heavy rain followed by snow clearing on Sunday morning. Keep an eye on the Sunday report for your last chance to get up to Hutt this season. When the weather does clear, don't forget the sunscreen... and Red Bull, have you seen the new flavours?!!

Closing dates are:
Last week Mt Hutt
Oct 22nd Whakapapa & Broken River.
Snovember 4th Turoa

If you're in the shaky city then you'll probably know that the Ice Fest is on this month. Get yourself down to the Ice Ring for a slide and note in your calendar the CHILL Film Festival. Check out the film previews on the Snow Sports Calendar. Also note for your calendar that the 20th annual Peak to the Powderkeg event is on next Saturday, it is a great event to watch up the hill, or go and have a beer at the Powderkeg and enjoy the spectacle as the racers come through the finish. Check out the New Zealand's only complete Snow Sports Calendar for more.

CALL TO VOTE: You choose. Tell us who shone and who stunk. Since 2000 online Snowco has published an independent survey, which asks the public to judge, based upon their experience the level of service that they have received during their visit to a ski or board area. The survey consists of 33 questions relating to the service received from the snow user across 9 departments that make up the front line of a ski and board operation. There are two awards, the NZ Ski Area Service Award for commercial ski areas and, the NZ Small Ski Area Service Award for club operated ski fields.

This is our last weekly newsletter for the winter of 2012. We will be sending you the first of our monthly summer newsletters next Thursday. It has been another fantastic season with an early start and good winter conditions in time for the winter school holidays. The weather pattern then changed dramatically and we have been in a pattern of low pressure systems crossing the country from the Tasman and bringing above average precipitation but with marginal freezing levels; in other words rain, snow, rain, snow on the ski and board areas. Enjoy the riding at BR, Whakapapa and Turoa for the next few weeks. Remember your sunscreen and that melt freeze snow is best ridden on after the melt part.

Whatever you do this summer, get into it and have a blast. Thanks for joining us this winter.
