Skia ora %%First Name%%,

Spring has sprung but not with the warm daffodil fuzzy weather, it's more the angry westerly's, lightening and horizontal snow type of spring so far. The snow and (dare I say it) rain icons have been dominating the snow forecast. The initial rain will turn to snow and we are expecting up to 10cms to fall in the east and 30cms to fall in the west of the South Island by the end of the weekend. The north will get snow as well from Saturday but this will be accompanied by severe gales form the westerly quadrant. Even the ducks will be heading for cover. Keep an eye on the reports and snowcams though because forecast can change.... but I doubt it.

As I mentioned spring is here with a vengeance and daylight saving is only three weeks away. Something that the ski areas as a whole do poorly is announcing their scheduled closing dates for the season. We understand that snow conditions may dictate at short notice when a ski area might close but announcing the planned closing is helpful for staff and visitors trying to plan ahead. Published proposed closing dates so far are: September 30th Treble Cone and October 7th Remarks, Coronet, Hutt and Ohau. Generally the ski and board areas in the South Island tend to close their doors after the last week of the school holidays (Sunday 7th October) with the exception of some of the club fields who opens for as long as the snow lasts, especially for the weekends. Ruapehu usually opens until at least Labour Weekend.

Events this weekend will be very much weather dependent so check out the reports on the day to see if the mountains are open and the events are still on. Two premier event this weekend are the Mini Winnie Junior Park Jam at Porters, “Unleash the under 12's on the Porters Mini park and see what happens!” and, the Winnie Bagoes Community Park Jam. Porter will be going off!! There is more for the kids down south with the CHILL Grom Fest and the Junior Interfields happening at Roundhill on saturday. Talk about clash of the codes!! Also there is a kids day out at Coronet on Sunday.

Ohau and Lyford always put on some classic events and this weekend is no exception with the Ohau Snow Ball and the Lyford Ski Masters drawing the crowds. The Whakapapa Xtreme Comp will start on the first day that the athletes are not likely to get blown off the pinnacles and can see the landing zones after Sunday. This is the 3* Freeride World Tour Qualifier and puts Mt Ruapehu on the map in the Big Mountain Freeride World. The Knoll Cafe deck is also the perfect viewing point so you can be sipping your latte in the sun while watching these athletes through themselves of The Pinnacles. Check out the New Zealand Snow Sports Calendar for more events and details.

For any athletes that are into multisport there is a new event on the calendar to compete in. The Dobson Dash (15th Sept) consists of a downhill mountain multisport event involving skiing/snowboarding, mountain biking and trail running down a 22km course. Enter Here

nzXsports.com Ltd (publisher of Snowco & Surfco) is selling some domain names . If you're in the market to purchase some choice domain names check out what's available and give Matt a call. CALL TO VOTE: You choose. Tell us who shone and who stunk. Since 2000 online Snowco has published an independent survey, which asks the public to judge, based upon their experience the level of service that they have received during their visit to a ski or board area. The survey consists of 33 questions relating to the service received from the snow user across 9 departments that make up the front line of a ski and board operation. There are two awards, the NZ Ski Area Service Award for commercial ski areas and, the NZ Small Ski Area Service Award for club operated ski fields.

Get into it, take care and have a blast.
