Skia ora %%First Name%%,
Welcome back winter, just in time for spring. Cold conditions and new snow from the last front freshened spring conditions right up the country. 15cms fell on mountains in Queenstown, 20cms around Wanaka, 30cms through the Mackenzie, between 15 & 45cms through Canterbury (and wind that saw over 300 people get stranded up at Hutt), and up to 25cms further north which saw all mountains north of the Craigieburn Range closed today. Of course all the new snow was accompanied with wind so the order of the day and this weekend will be to seek out the drifts, pockets and stashes of powder and stay clear of the windward slopes.
Take a breath and enjoy Saturday this weekend in the south because that is the place to be. A front will move up the country from late Saturday bringing more snow down to 800m in the south and 1200m in the North Island. Sorry folks the North Island looks windy on Saturday as well.
The weather pattern has certainly changed for the onset of spring. A more consistent south-westerly flow is bringing colder fronts over the country which should keep the snowpacks topped up through to the end of the season. A reminder that in the South Island, apart from Mt Hutt which is closing on Oct 13th, most areas will stay open until the end of the first week of the school holidays (Oct 6th); just four weeks to go. Mt Ruapehu stays open until Labour Weekend and beyond. (Snow permitting).

p.s. A big shout out to Brandex and Atomic who saved my bacon. Thanks for the loan of the demo skis for my family holiday after my old skis finally gave up the will to carry me any further.
