New Zealand’s Cross Country Team Member, Andrew Pohl, took 14th place in his first race of the Northern Hemisphere season at the opening events of the 2010 USSA SuperTour in scenic West Yellowstone, Montana.

While Pohl, who competes in the under 23 category, had his best result in the freestyle event, he also succeeded in achieving a mid field result in the classic race.

The opposition included Canadian and American team members, corporate sponsored teams, and University teams.

Nils Koons made his debut skiing for New Zealand at the races, having recently declared a change of nation with (International Federation of Ski) FIS from USA to New Zealand. Koons, who attends the prestigious Dartmouth University, was skiing for the Dartmouth team.

Like his elder brother, Ben Koons, Nils prefers classic skiing, which was evident in his results. He took seventh in the Under 23 category and 35th overall. In the freestyle he took a 10th in the Under 23.

"Nils is not currently a New Zealand team member, but based on this performance he has staked a claim," commented NZCCSA's John Burridge.

While Pohl's FIS points were not good enough to bring down his average on this occasion, Koons performance in the classic race would have been well below Olympic qualification level (estimated at mid 80's against the 100 needed for Olympic qualification) but due to his late licence change his FIS points are not yet registered.
