Queenstown's Mitchey Greig got her skier cross season off to an encouraging start Wednesday with a 15th place finish at a World Cup event in San Candido, Italy.

Greig improved on her performance from the previous day, when she finished 32nd in a make-up for a previously cancelled race.

Both Tuesday's and Wednesday's races were won by Sweden's Anna Holmlund, who will enter the Olympics as one of the pre-race favourites.

Greig, who will compete for New Zealand at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, will have a short break for the holidays before continuing her training and competition schedule in the lead-up to the Games.

Greig is the only New Zealand skier competing in skier cross at the World Cup level.
