An open event, the series welcomes all free-ride skiers and snowboarders to compete together in an open format. New for 2009, after a strong field of younger skiers in 2008, a grom division will allow those younger skiers and riders under the age of 18 to compete at a high level.
The K2 Big Mountain CHILL Series is also recognised as part of the NZ Freeride series for 2009, thereby acting as a qualifying event for the Freeride World Tour. (See details at end of article).
Significant snow falls have filled in the ski areas with an excellent snow pack, and the competition promises to be an epic battle of the many free-ride masters in attendance.
The format for the competitions will depend largely on the weather and snow conditions at Mt Olympus and Craigieburn leading to the event. At each location, the format will allow each skier/rider two runs to impress the judges. If the weather holds, and snow conditions are suitable, a super-final will be held on the second day at each location to crown overall champions for each division, plus an overall series crown will be announced.
There's $2800 of cash prizes up for grabs, along with a swag of goodies from K2, Smith optics, Sessions outerwear, and much more.
Athletes are encouraged to log onto the CHILL website to register for the K2 series now. Sign up before the 17th of August for both events (CV and MO) for just $55, or $30 for each location. From 18th August on, registration will be $70 for both locations, or $40 for each on the day.
More information is available through the CHILL site, or you can email on , or call 03 318 4830.
