While most New Zealanders are basking in warm temperatures and sunshine, 16 elite athletes, their coaches and support personnel are on the other side of the world, where it’s winter, gearing up to represent New Zealand at the upcoming 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games.

For those who can't make it to Canada for the real deal, Snowplanet, Snow Sports New Zealand (SSNZ) and the New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) have joined forces to help you get in the spirit and cheer on your fellow countrymen at an Opening Ceremonies Gala in Auckland's own ‘winter wonderland' - Snowplanet.

The gala will fire up at 1:30 pm on Saturday, 13 February with an on snow celebration where kids will ski and snowboard whilst proudly modelling flags of some of the Winter Olympics competing nations. This will be followed with a ski and snowboard exhibition by Snowplanet's talented instructors.

The day culminates with a Haka leading into Sky's live coverage of the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony from Vancouver.

Entry is free for spectators and normal daily prices will apply to those wishing to ski or snowboard. Please note that the slopes will be closed to the public for up to an hour during the flag bearing and exhibition.
The venue will be themed for the Olympics and a special menu will be on offer for those seeking refreshment.

Throughout the two weeks of the Winter Olympics Games, Snowplanet will air live coverage of the Olympics and will host a Mini Winter Olympics for those motivated by the Olympians who are looking to get their feet wet in the competition arena.
