About Ski the Tasman
Ski The Tasman operates in the shadow of Aoraki/Mt Cook, and the great peaks of the Southern Alps. This is one of the most spectacular ski trips in the world and is accessible to intermediate skiers. Professionally guided by Alpine Guides (Aoraki) Ltd, nobody else gets you into such big mountains.
The Mount Cook Region
The Aoraki/Mount Cook region is an area of huge and heavily glaciated peaks, located at the heart of the Southern Alps. This region contains 29 peaks over 3000 metres and is characterised by extensive glaciation. Aoraki/Mount Cook rises to a height of 3,754 metres - rising 3 kilometres above the valley floor.
The Tasman Glacier, New Zealand's longest, threads its way for 27 kms past our highest peaks. The terrain is gentle, with the highlights being the ice-falls and caves that can be explored on the 10 km ski run.
Our terrain is high alpine - we leave the tree line thousands of feet below. This is a world of snow, rock, and ice. We get new snow from every winter storm and extensive glaciation increases the range of run options, the variety of terrain and quality of the runs available.
The Day
Our day starts at Mount Cook airport with a safety briefing by your qualified guide. Then we load into one of the world famous ski planes for a scenic 20 flight, landing at 2500m at the head of the glacier. In small groups you will be guided down the 8-10 km run, with plenty of time to take photos and explore ice caves. A return flight to another location is followed by lunch and the second long run of the day. Finally, a 3rd flight will return you to Mount Cook airport with a huge smile on your face and indelible memories.
Snowpack
The Southern Alps has a maritime snowpack. Expect variation in snow conditions and cover throughout the season. Powder is more common earlier in the season, with spring snow from late August.
